Sky to save customers money - Standby issue

When digital TV inputs (ie. HDMI) have caught on a bit more, presumably it would be easy enough for the box to detect whether or not the TV is being watched, and if it's not then go into standby. I'm guessing at the moment with analog interfaces like composite and s-video, there's no way for the box to detect whether the TV is on or not so it has to rely on user input to know whether it's in use or not.

What about those like me, who switch it to a radio station overnight, ready for my amp to auto switch on in the morning and give me radio to wake up to?

Will they bring back the AutoView feature they removed from the Sky+ boxes, which was present on the normal boxes? I used to use that as we had a single box piped to other rooms - set up your night's TV with auto-view and you don't need to run up and down the stairs.

At least they didn't mention how much carbon it'll save

What purpose does hibernation serve for you? Surely it's just impatient mans shutdown with your PC being arguably less secure as a result.

Good invention! About time too.

less secure?

I hope there is an option to disable it.

We have our sky box going through all the tv aerials so we can watch it upstairs. I don't want to have run downstairs every 2 hours when watching late night telly.

how do you get your sky box running to all the internal areal sockets?

If he does it the way we used to, you just take the RF output from the Sky box, run it in to a splitter/booster and then cable up to the rooms.

It's impossible to actually turn the Samsung LCD TVs off. They are either on standby, or unplugged at the mains.

I'd be disabling this for sure, i work nights and at the weekends i can be watching tv up to 3-4am, dont want some silly message telling me its going to turn off, lol.

Sounds to me like a sleep function like with TV's or xbox 360 if left on over certain amount of time it auto switchs off.

The things are still using power in standby so its not totaly stoping the waste and i dont see there being a massive number of people leaving there box's actualy turned on all time for no reason at all.

Just seems to me like a cheap way to try get some good press rather than all the bad they've been getting lately.

Most things are turned off bay the mains in this house at night which means no standby which is no power at all being drawn at all.
