SKY TV

Right, so plan of action for tomorrow – ring Sky and see if they have a problem with me not having a line first, then ring Virgin and cancel the Cable TV and ‘mention’ I plan to leave them entirely; hopefully this will lead to free phone and either a reduction in my BB price or a free upgrade :D

Scort.

Sounds like a good plan there, :) Let us know how you get on.

Will do, knowing my luck though, they'll likely say 'bye then' - everyone else I've spoken to (family and friends) seem to get half price BB for a year, or free upgrades, or both!

Take it from me you dont need a phone line connected to the sky box after the 12month contract has run its course. We have had a grundig box running for 24+ months out of contract and the only annoyance is when the box is turned on from cold it will complain about the telephone lead not being detected so pressing the "back up" button makes it go away. Ive never had any trouble having the box like this and it doesnt bother us as we dont order box office movies. Our sky+ box is now just out of its 12month contract and I disconnected the telephone lead to see what would happen, its completely fine.

I never keep my Sky+ box connected to the phone line. For some strange reason it halfed my broadband connection from 2mb to 1mb. The second i pulled the cable from the back of the Sky box, the speed went up. Left it out ever since. Never had any trouble.

You do need a phone line as part of their terms and conditions for the first 12 months but it doesnt matter if its a BT phone line or a Virgin phone line or any other phone line for that matter ...you just need a phone line.
Whether they actually keep you to having it connected it a bit hit and miss, some people get moaned at for not having it connected and some get away with it for years, the one they are very hot on is if you have multi room, they pretty much always get onto you if you dont have them connected with multi room.

BTW if your connection slows with the Sky box connected its because you haven't got micro filters on ALL of your equipment that connects to the phones.

Thanks for the extra info :)

My BB is cable with Virgin, so no filters, I may tell them that I'm waiting for a Virgin phone line when I call today, then see if they still install it; I would imagine they use it for stats as well as the services that need the line?

I shall call them shortly....

I can not find where i read about it at the moment ( i thought it was somewhere on these forumns), but i believe you can pay a one off fee for not conecting the sky box to a phone line.

All done now, I opted to pay the extra £25 'non standard installation' fee, so it will be installed without a phone line, so I may not bother getting one, can't see me ever wishing to use box office.

Scort.

Not read the whole thread so apologies if already mentioned;

A phone line is required for the engineer to activate the card, altough there is ways around this by being clever with the engineer and on the phone.

But you can pay a one off fee of £25 for whats called a manual enablement, which the activation is done over the phone.

If you ever get multi room in you will need both boxes connected to the phone line.

Oppps should have at least read the last post!
