I ordered 20mb Sky package (Sky Max)

We have a letter saying for the first few days it will be an intermitent connected and be around 4mb then it will improve until the connection is reliable. Surely this means it could be 6mb, 8mb or whatever the hell they want it to be, then just say "its the best connection where your house is"

I know our house is right next to an exchange so wont be happy if its a poor connection and they fob us off with a load of crap about line distance etc

Surely its like selling a customer in a supermarket some premium product then receiving homebrand crap?

Sky stated that they expected me to get around 9mb.
I actually get 15.4mb 24/7 with no issues.

Your house may be right near the exchange, but that doesn't mean the line length will be short. The line doesn't go direct to the exchange it follows the roads and such, and so can be MUCH longer than the distance from your house to the exchange.

You pay for a connection that is UP TO a certain speed, if your line can not perform better then what you are getting then nothing can be done about it other then paying for a cheaper service.

^ in that case shouldnt they measure average distance of the cable and sell it nearer to the actual speed - 15mb, 8mb or whatever. I could pay for an 'upto 1TB connection' and only get 1mb because it has to go around hundreds of miles of roads

Because there are other factors that influence sync speed, not just line length. And they already offer different levels of service, so if your speeds fall below the next tier down you can downgrade. Though why you're complaining about speeds when you haven't even had the service activated yet I don't know.

thanks. ill wait and see. It says its activated on the 10th and not to connect until then. Will it go bang if i try and connect it before that date? It would be good to have some net access over the weekend

It just will not connect, as this what happened when I first had Orange BB set up & I hooked the router up on the same day that it but the activation date was not until around 4 working days later and until then all it kept doing was trying to find a sync from the exchange and then on the activation date it finally sync'd at around 11am, but it deffo won't go online until the activation date as that is when the complete set up on your phone line will be ready to connect.

The worst that will happen is that it wont work. I've had broadband services actived early before, but my Sky one was activated on the day that it was meant to be

Sky were pretty damn good when we moved to them in June.

from my post on another forum:

Rang BT on the 3rd June, Got the line installed & activated on the 18th June, Rang Sky the same day to order the broadband, Broadband was activated by the 26th June, Cancelled Virgin on the 18th of June they kept it going till the 18th of July.

They estimated 5.5mb from my line, but DLM put it upto 9mb, thought I'd ring sky to see if I could get more speed 5 days after DLM & they put it to 13mb. Having no problems & love the service so far.
