Hi,

I'm talking specifically about the Internet + TV + Phone packages that both Sky and Virgin offer.

Any preference between the two?

And out of interest, would I still need to pay line rental to BT, or is it generally included?

Thanks - I'm a bit of a noob :o

We have Sky for TV and Virgin for broadband (best of both worlds, better channel line up + 50meg), but it depends on what you're after from both?

In terms of line rental, you essentially end up paying line rental on both if you want a phone.

I've always been of the opinion that Sky have the best channels, but Virgin Media have the best delivery. Virgin Medias tv on demand is simply stunning for what it offers and in all the years of having it the picture never breaks up, sure sky's not bad but I have seen it all too often break up but maybe I've been unlucky.

Cable internet is also far superior to any adsl package IMO.

Well, I'm after Internet and TV - Internet needs to be of a good speed, currently on 8meg at home and that's fine, the new flat is in a town centre-ish though, so I imagine the line speed will be faster.

TV wise, just something with lots of good channels - to be honest I don't watch a lot of TV, so FreeSatHD might do tbh. If its not going to be a significant more per month for Sky-esque TV though, it could be worth it :)

I looked around at getting sky after being on virgin but when i priced it up Sky was far more expensive. I know i went through rententions but i get 20 Mb Broad band, line rental with free weekend calls, HD channels, the XL sub for the TV with free TV on demand, muisc, and catch up all for £37 a month. Think for sky the closest i could get was close to £50 a month, not saying the services are the same but at least i get a constant 20MB with Virgin and not 8 i would only be able to get with sky.

So if I got a broadband only deal (looking at around £20 a month-ish) with Virgin, would I still need to pay line rental, even if I don't have a phone?

Thanks.

We're on a basic virgin tv package, 1 meg internet and a phone line for something like £29 a month including line rental, think it was my far the cheapest.

I've got sky for BB and TV. Originally wanted to go with Virgin as their cheaper, but in my building i can only go with sky/bt.

Very happy with it. Get 17mb on the BB and sky digital UI is second to none.

Bear in mind that sky broadband is not actually unlimited, i phoned virgin to complain about my package and said that sky were cheaper and then he went through my usage... month by month.... 200GB one month 300GB the next.... He said i'd have had a letter from sky if i was with them as it wasn't truely unlimited.
Keep that in mind.

Phone - neither are better
BB - Virgin wins
TV - Sky wins

So I'd need to ask Virgin themselves if Line Rental is included in the price?

They do with and without offers on phone lines.

Brother has virgin media piped straight into his bedroom and pays no line rental. He pays £20 a month I believe. If you get the phone line its cheaper for the broadband, £12 I think, But you pay another £11 line rental.

As for sky unlimited not being unlimited, I've had it going on 2 years now, and I've never hit any sorts of limits. Downloading, Streaming HD. Pretty much 24/7. I actually prefer it to virgin media's offering

Well we don't need a phone at all - one will be there, but not plugged in or used - so if we'll be having broadband only, whats the deal then, is line rental still applicable, or is that only if you have a phone being used?

With Sky you need a phone line as its ADSL.

With Virgin if you're currently paying nothing for line rental, and order broadband only you dont pay line rental and so wont start. They come and install a box on your wall its completely seperate to the phone.

Depends which version you have, I forget the package names but if Sky have there own equipment in the exchange its unlimited otherwise they just re brand what they buy from BT which is not unlimited iirc.

I personally cannot stand the user interface and speed of Virgin TV so I'd pick Sky over it for that reason alone :)

I think we're going to go for FreeSat or similar, we don't really watch enough TV to justify paying a monthly subscription :)
