hi guys im having a problem with my skybroadband, i get connected through a wireless adaptor to my supplied broadband router (DG834GT) ,but quite often the modem looks as though it disconnects ,now the router broadband green "i" light is still on and my adapter reads as its still connected , but all of a sudden it goes dead slow , so i pull the power plug on the router and repower back up and everything is fine again , have any of you guys got any ideas wots happening to it as its really iiritating me lol ,also the router is only about 5 ft away from the adaptor so ive got an excellent signal so it cant be that, im also running vista 32 bit ,but have got vista drivers for the adaptor , any ideas you guys ?

Do you lose connection to the internet or does it just start to go slow? When your adapter reads as connected, is that just to the router, or do you still have internet access?

on the taskbar the adaptor still shows connected , and on the modem the broadband "I" light shows still connected ,but when i click on any website nothing comes up at all ,so i assume its not connected any ideas ?

I had nothing but problems with that router.

Bought a Belkin wireless G router to replace it and all is fine and dandy.

just says "page cannot be displayed " ,you know the same as if your internet wasnt connecteed at all and you clicked on internet explorer !

I've been having very similar problems with my Netgear DG834 over wireless recently. Frequently I'd get pages timing out, and I thought it was ISP side.

I changed the wireless broadcast channel to see whether I was getting interference, and it seems to have solved the problem, might be worth giving it a go?

What are you doing before it stops working? Running anything that opens a lot of connections - game server browser, P2P app?

Connect to your router ( should be via 192.168.1.1 in IE/Firefox user : admin / password: password )

Under WAN settings, there should be an option called 'broadcast signal' - change it to something else and see if it makes a difference.

What was it set to, and what did you change it to? Channels 1, 6 and 11 are the only three channels that don't overlap with each other.

I get this from time to time, I think it is due to my line sometimes connecting at too fast a speed (and hence a very low SNR). For example I had a dodgy connection this evening, checked the router and it was synced at 13.5mbit with a 4.9 SNR. Resetting the power a couple of times usually gets it down to a more sensible level, now at 12.5mbit with 7.1 SNR.

Obviously before messing about with your internet connection it might be worth diagnosing your WLAN first (try pinging the router a few hundred times and see if you get any delayed or lost packets).

This is an issue with the firmware Sky put on all their DG834GTs. The firmware's so bad, even Sky can't do upgrades to fix bugs lol Go to the Sky User Forum and follow the tutorial for flashing the firmware to a better version.

Netgear have an official 1.02.09 firmware out, but the UberGT firmware is even better (it allows you to tweak SNR, has NAT loopback etc). There are others (eg GaTi) but UberGT's the best and is stable. You can pick and choose the firmware as Netgear used GPL code for their routers - hence it's open source and allowed to be modified :D

Normally with DG834GTs you can just upgrade the firmware using the utility in the config interface/web gui, but for Sky you need to properly flash and reset it first.

All instructions are HERE.

EDIT: Make sure you pay attention at the part about recovering your username and password! On a normal DG834GT your username and password are visible but Sky locked it out. If you don't have your username and password before flashing you'll not be able to reconnect to Sky Broadband! It's easy so long as you follow the destructions :)

BTW, the addy for the Netgear DG834GT is http://192.168.0.1 not 192.168.1.1 ;) The username is admin and the password is sky (not password). It's that stupid Sky firmware again! ;)

I agree with Rainmaker, the firmware is quite bad. Mine used to be unstable like yours so I had to tweak the target SNR to make it stable.

If you are using Vista I wouldn't flash the firmware. The program is not compatible and will blue screen during the flash making the router unusable and unrecoverable. I done this a few weeks ago. :(

If you want to tweak the target SNR without flashing, I would try using this site.

Yes, sorry I should have said - you need to use XP to flash a Sky router. I didn't think to say so as my router was a standard off the shelf one and I was able to upgrade it to UberGT under Linux :)

If you tweak the SNR using DMT you will lose the changes on reboot - I think that applies to the Netgear utility as well? That was the whole point of UberGT firmware - the SNR tweaks stick at reboot :)

So if you DO have Vista *shudder*, borrow a mate's XP box for ten minutes (you can take the router to them, you don't need to actually borrow the PC lol).

Best of luck :D

how often is it dropping the connection. if its every 17-19mins turn off upnp as it a glitch in the firmware.

Which version of the firmware though? If the OP ditches the crippled Sky f/w and uses UberGT or similar, that should sort the problem anyway? Or is this some bug in the latest 1.02.09 that I hadn't heard of?
