This is mainly a question for future reference, but now that on Skylake with voltage regulation moving back to the motherboard, will this mean a setback for mATX clocking? On current Haswell there's literally no difference between the boards other than features, in terms of most clocks (4.5Ghz). Will it be likely that mATX will do considerably worse on Skylake now?

There's variation between mATX z170 boards on CPU power supply (phase counts etc.). There is no other reason why mATX would perform worse.

If you choose a mATX board with comparable power delivery circuitry to an ATX board, then they will perform comparably.

I'll continue my mATX case search for x99 then, happy in the knowledge I can reuse it if I go Skylake-E
(I never SLI or use any PCI ports except the GPU, so I see no reason to use a full ATX board anyway).
