Looking to upgrade the trusty 2500K with a shiney new Processor/Board and Ram. (skylake is currently being looked at in august) All I use my PC for is gaming/browsing.. Ideally I'd like this upgrade to last as long as the 2500K so wondering whether to go I7 or go I5.

Anyone know if the I7 hyperthreading will make a big difference gaming over the next few years or will the I5 be a good starting point and then sell on and upgrade to an I7 once more game utilise the extra grunt an I7 gives ?

what does your current rig not do? the differences in cpu performance since sandybridge arnt really anything to write home about tbh

just seems performance has seemed to have slowed down over the past few weeks... Overclock dropped off 1 week and could really feel the difference.. back to 4.2 now and not as bad .

Just feel an upgrade is due to make it a lot 'snappier'.

How long are we talking before games are able to use hyper threading effectively and will it really make that much difference to justify the extra cast of an i7?

How long is a piece of string? It's been 'just a few years' for many years now. I can't decide if I want it to come or not - if it does hopefully it'll unlock better performance, but if not then it keeps things cheaper for me!

+1 Get a 5820K, you get 2 extra cores + 28 PCI-E 3.0 lanes and its available now.

Have been tempted a couple of times about grab my an x99 setup.

Might price up what an x99 will be compared to a rough skylake price.. Tbh I don't think there will be much in it price wise.

Another vote for an i7 from me. Seeing as you've got a crossfire setup already an i7 would go that little bit further in future-proofing your build if you ever decide to crossfire again down the line.
