Skynet

An AI that could pass the Turing test would seem indistinguishable from a human, but this doesn't mean it's self aware. I think the reason we can't pin down when/if/how an AI can be self aware is because we still don't understand consciousness.

I would say my dog is self aware. But where do you draw the line? Is a mouse self aware? Or a slug? There must a point during an organisms evolution where a transition (gradual) over time from instinctive behaviour to consciousness occurs. When we fully understand this process then I suspect we would be better equipped to spot self awareness in a machine.

I thought it was a military ai, given freedom on the net to wipeout the virus that was infecting the world's infrastructure.
But it was responsible for the virus in the first place.... Or was the virus just on the military computer network? I can't remember lol.

Anyway they used skynet to fix it, but in that time it evolved and became sentient and worked out that " kill all humans" was a good idea.

It was sentient before they gave it access to the military systems.

The Skynet system only has 60TFlops of computing power.

The T100 says Skynet spread as a virus and by the time it became selfaware it was everywhere (i.e. impossible to stop).

The only reason I started this thread is because we currently have uncontrolled botnets running around the world. Is it possible they could ever evolve.

One of the easier ways is to base it on human intelligence at different ages rather than animals.

So I think we can make AI at the level of fish or humans at an embryo stage.

That's a good chart. What are the figures in The Human Age Equivalent denoting?

Human intelligence as the brain develops I would guess. It's no secret babies are stupid.

I think they used the following calculator.

edit:

It doesn't seem to define the human age equivalent. I guess that must have just been the author's judgement in the essay below.

Killer robots: Experts warn of 'third revolution in warfare'

More than 100 leading robotics experts are urging the United Nations to take action in order to prevent the development of "killer robots".

The 116 experts are calling for a ban on the use of AI in managing weaponry.

"Once developed, they will permit armed conflict to be fought at a scale greater than ever, and at timescales faster than humans can comprehend," the letter says.

"These can be weapons of terror, weapons that despots and terrorists use against innocent populations, and weapons hacked to behave in undesirable ways," it adds.

There is an urgent tone to the message from the technology leaders, who warn that "we do not have long to act".

"Once this Pandora's box is opened, it will be hard to close."

Killer robots lol. If they're all running Windows then they'll blue screen before any real damage is done. ;)

Imagine that, Cortana asking how you would like to die today. Our only hope is that the constant updates will slow them down enough so we can run away. :p

Didn't two super computers at Facebook recently create their own language to talk secretly to each other and they had to pull the plug? (might be slightly off here lol :p)

Skynet is a military program designed to have "AI" features. The premise in the film is that it initially spreads as a virus until it eventually becomes self aware. The implication is that at some point it has so much processing power at its disposal that it evolves in nature to become self aware.

You have to remember that Terminator 3 is very badly written and urinates all over the story of the original two films (I.E "The future is not set, no fate but what we make" vs "Judgement day is inevitable").

In the original films Skynet was the defense computer system in charge of nuclear defense, essentially a dead hand system, able to respond even if the USSR wiped out the entire US chain of command. The internet didn't exist yet in it's current format so wasn't part of the story. As it was a learning computer it eventually perceived humans as an existential threat (thus becoming self aware) and so sought to eliminate them by triggering WW3 (launching it's missiles against the USSR). It then somehow (isn't mentioned in story) took control of a factory making experimental combat android soldiers (1997 was expected to be more advanced back in 1984) and used them as drones and mechanized servants to expand it's empire and eliminate the rest of the humans (putting them into Nazi style death camps).

In Terminator 3, this was changed (as the film came out post 1997 so the original timeline was shot) and after becoming self aware Skynet then uploaded itself to the cloud (still called cyberspace at this point) before doing what it did in he original timeline.
