skype phones, not caught on? why?

They use data. Data via mobile networks is extortionate.

what if your on an unlimited data plan? or your at home or work using the wireless internet connection?

I can't even use all my inclusive minutes.

The only people I know who use skype for for people calling abroad.

your on the wrong tariff then and has nothing to do with skype, if people use it for international calls, why not national as well? since its free

the reasons you guys have given dont seem good enough for it not to be successful, there must be something that we are all missing, or maybe it just needs more publicity?

If you're on an unlimited data plan then you can most likely get a better phone for free. As far as i know no Skype phone has wifi.

INQ are a great phone manufacturer though, can't wait to see what they do with Android :)

because how many people actually use skype ? i dont have any mates who do. infact i reckon most wouldnt even know what it is

therefore my reason is lack of marketing

Because its not that expensive to run a mobile, or house phone these days?

Can you imagine teaching your gran how to use it?

Once the older generation dies out, maybe it will come to better use.

not that expensive to run a home or mobile phone? depends on who you are and how much you use your phone, some peoples phone bills run into many hundreds of pounds.

plus what if you run a business or many business's? do you have have any idea how large phone bills can get? yes if you only use your phone once or twice a day its not that much, but if your constantly using one then it all adds up.

also how difficult would it be to teach your gran? connect to your wireless network. which is as easy as searching for it, then typing in the password. then call whoever you want to call. im sure i could teach an 8 year old how to use it.

This.

I won't allow it to be installed on either my home network, or at work. I've even had it written into the IT usage policy.

what if your using a wifi handset or cordless phone? so you dont need to install anything on your pc or router. you just need to connect to a wi-fi spot, which means you could use it in your home easily and replace your home phone.

i think the only reason why it hasn't caught on is because everybody would have to make the switch at the same time. or else you would end up with 2 phones. a normal one for phoning normal phones and a skype phone for phoning skype phones. basically it needs more marketing and awareness, i would say 99% of people aren't even aware of what you can do with it and its free due to using your internet connection.

I use Skype, Its awesome, I can call home for less than 1p a minute, as well as mobiles for a fraction of what it costs to call from a landline here.
Plus I get to videocall my girlfriend for free when she isnt here.
I wouldnt use it much if I wasnt abroad, except to call others who are abroad, as I have free minutes and texts to be used.

I use it for international calls. Very handy.

Day to day use UK, no point. Get loads of free calls on mobile and landlines are free with BT on the package I'm on :)

Excellent concept, they have to be doing something right as it got sold for $2b in Sept 09 so someones using it

skype is bigger in America i believe than it is in UK.

wait for google voice to make big changes i think

im on skype right now talking to my wife in the US, i either run up bills of £60 + calling the US or do it for free on skype, plus i get video :)
