I ******* hate Skype, it sucks *****! There I am happily conversing with my OH on the other side of the pond and everything ****** freezes, then quits the call.

Okay, wait a few moments and after a few failed attempts to reconnect because we're both hitting the call button at the same time we eventually reestablish a connection... for about 5 ***** seconds. Even the text chat server screws up!

Fine, we resolve (through delayed and stuttered lines of text) that when we get reconnected we'll just say our goodnights and leave it... but skype has other ideas. I have now given up after multiple counts of "unknown error", "misc error" and "user not online" when they clearly are! I mean, what's the ****** difference between a misc error and an unknown one?

And it's not like this is uncommon, this is pretty much the way that a half to two thirds of all my skype calls have to be closed. What the **** is wrong with them? It's owned by eBay for crying out loud, it's not like they don't have any ******* money to make this work! ******* ****** ******** service! Gaaaaaargh!!

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

The problem isn't ebay its the transport (p2p) it relies on. Ebay has a licence to use Skype, but not the system it relies on to work. It was a big mistake buying skype.

How dare skype to try provide you with a free service so you can talk to your other half!

On a serious note, it's frustrating yes but think - 10 years ago this wasn't even possible. Skype, msn etc still have huge audio/video bugs. But I can't imagine how difficult it is to work on these.

Ah, you didn't say anything about video.

I use Skype (almost) every workday, and have done for several years. I've had plenty of audio gremlins, but not a single freeze/crash.

Thought that might come up ;) But I do pay for the Skypeout services and have had numerous problems with that too (choppy or full of static) even on high-speed networks. It's not like they haven't got any money to work with, and they are the biggest VoIP presence in the world, I'd expect that to translate to the best... but clearly not.

Mmhmm, started out on video but once those gremlins show up they **** everything over - can't get a decent audio connection without the video either.

if you pay for the service then I would kick up a fuss too tbh. But then the best voip company doesn't translate to a good service, it just means they are better than the rest. Even so, I don't know any reliable audio video im's. I have always liked msn but every time I press video call to my parents - it crashes :p

Since when has that been true? Anywhere? Name me one big corporation that is 'the best'.

TBH I can't think of many... Apple with portable music devices maybe.

But anyway, the point is I should be justified in having such an expectation - a company only gets bigger that all the rest by having the most customers, and this in turn is usually only achievable if the product offered is comparably better than everything else on offer in the same industry, right?

True, skype really does have the potential to go somewhere but really ebay is cocking it up - not sure how, lack of investment/planning etc who knows. But I do know that skype can do better.

But tbh. When facebook make an im app. everything else will get dropped (if it's good enough)

I know I would drop my skype, msn and gchat accounts for facebook email/im services. it would be well tied in together.

But at present there is no all in wall social app. Facebook has the nearest in regards to cross boarder functionality (photo hosting, updates, web based im etc) but it doesnt have a im client for voice/video. I think that would be a good port of call for them tbh and very easy to get into that market.
