******* ****** **** *** skype!

Same here, my GF is far far away, we are on skype most nights on video, and every minute at least 1 of our vids will freeze. Apparantly if you roll back to an earlier version, its a lot more stable, seems the latest releases have got worse and worse :p

I use Skype a lot - it's the best there is in my opinion. Your problems are not with Skype but rather with one or both of your systems or the ISPs between in my opinion.

Skype is heavily dependent on having decent hardware and a good network connection.

It will also proxy through a third party sometimes to get around NAT issues so that's what may be happening here.

I used Skype with my ex between UK/Colombia with minimal hassle :)

Anyone know why skype trys to call a mobile number when I try to call an 0800 number, it even takes the 0 off and says invalid phone number

We used to use skype with 0800 numbers all the time for office teleconferences.

Well they turned me down as product manager :D so I feel no guilt :D

Skype for me has always worked fairly well but you do get a few problems sometimes.

I think also some ISP's may throttle skype sometimes which can cause bad connections or low quality sound and video.

Did you select "United Kingdom"? Otherwise it is probably trying to dial a US number.

And yes, I use it for 0800 calls too. My daily Skype calls go to a 1-800 number (US Toll Free) so that's free too (in fact, Skype is the only way I know to make those calls free from the UK). Just as well given the hundreds of calls I've made.

Skype is a free service is it not?

If you want a reliable service, stop being a cheap skate and use a proper land line or mobile service?

Also never had any problems using MSN over webcam, maybe try that??

This really is a bug bear of mine, people complaining about FREE services!!

MSN has always been absolutely fine for me for video - you could try that?

Alternatively, Gmail's video chat also works wonders - msyelf and my colleague hold regular video chats via this. Both just need to sign up to a Gmail account (which you should anyway) and away you go.
