Skyrim Constant CTD :(

Under The Stairs!
Played my brothers Skyrim on release and when the High Res Texture Pack/Workshop was released, I took the plunge and bought myself a copy.

Not far into the game and while on the 'A blade in the dark' quest, I'm now getting a constant CTD whenever I run just past Morvunskar following 'what's her name'.

Attempts at trying the following have all failed to resolve the CTD:

Disabled the few mods I had and the high res pack, ran vanilla Skyrim.

Went back and took a different route past the Ustengrav Depths(loads of rivers and finally down the mountain).

Attempted to play on a different Nvidia system.

Each time there is always a CTD!:(

Every time I get close to a dragon in the distance which is circling round a set of rocks that's when the CTD occurs regardless of what direction I approach.

I'm on 6950>70 CrossFire(same CTD on single card or CrossFire), 2500K, but as I said it CTD on a tottaly different Nvidia system, so I ruled out an AMD problem.

Any help would be very welcome before I fall out with Skyrim.

IIRC that is a known CTD spot and it happens to loads of people. Some weird "fixes" work for some people including such things as not looking at the NPC you are following, running backwards, looking at the floor etc.

There should be a few threads knocking about out there about this.

You could ensure that all the mods are disabled AND then go indoors somewhere quiet and wait for 30 days, not literally 30 "real" days but.....well I guess you know what I mean :D

If it was due to a mod that should reset all the characters, npc's and modified stuff in the outside world. I did read somewhere that it takes around that time for the world to reset and things then spawn back to how they should be.

I assume that you are trying to load the same saved game on a different system..? If so again try the waiting thing for 30 days.

Edit : Maybe Clav's post above might be more relevant about your issue though

There was an area that kept crashing for me. The fix was to run the game in a window to get past that area.

LOL at the reply times: 9:40, 9:46, 9:50, 9:56

I gave up along while ago with this after the patches released did less than nothing.

I've tried every single 'fix' that's been offered by the community and none has worked so its been un-installed.

Bloody frustrating as well because what I did play of the game it seemed awesome but I'll not spend another penny on a Bethesda game I'm afraid after this experience.

Thanks for all the replies and help so far.

Yes it's fully updated, all the 'fixes' above bar the 30 day wait(haven't had time to try yet) don't work.

If I can't get it working, like ManCuBuS, I won't be getting another Bethseda title either, parts of F3 were a nightmare jumping to different PC's to get past certain levels but the expansion packs wouldn't work for me as well with the exact same CTD.

So far NV has been relatively pain free, but it hasn't grasped my attention tbh.

Once I try the 30 day time fix, I'll report back.

Skyrim used to crash for me when my graphics card was overclocked.

Was perfectly ok in furmark and all other games but it would crash in skyrim after 2 minutes.

Putting the card back to stock settings fixed it for me. Card is a 6870 btw

Ive got a 36 hour save and its CTD just 2 times. I save all the time anyway. I had a similiar thing to you but on a mages guild quest at a certain point in i had ti use the fire spell to open a door, none of the fixes worked. Then the first patch was released and it worked straight away.
I know its not ideal but you can use the console the advance your quest. You may aswell play the rest of the game!

Not the 30 day reset thing either.

Also tried changing sound properties, disabling steam overlay and 4Gb fix, nothing.

Just spent 3+ hrs trying/looking for a fix and nothing.

There goes another £30 for ~3 hrs gaming!

Times like this the words 360/PS3 springs to mind for less hassles and save myself an absolute fortune to boot!:(

For the first time ever:eek:, seriously considering it!

My brother has it on the 360 and his crashes a fair bit so that would be pointless.

Have you tried running it in a window just to get past that bit? Like I said that worked for me.

Yes, tried windowed mode too, still CTD.

On my search for a fix, there has been a few cases of the exact same ctd on the same quest, one guy even re-formated, re-installed Skyrim and started from scratch for it to do the same.

Don't suppose you could be kind enough(or any other kind OCUk'er) to send me a save of the completed quest perchance?

Not bothered about the character in the save at all, as it pains me to restart any game to find it's just going to repeat the fault.

Sound on 44/48khz not higher? ( game fails with 88, 96, 176 or 192khz)
CTD in some places fixable with windowed mode ?

In your OP you say that you have tried it on a different system and you get the same ctd?

If so, it is more than likely a problem with that particular savegame and nothing could fix it I am afraid(afaik). Have you tried reloading earlier saves? You might get away with a save an hour earlier maybe.

@snowdog and Pighardia,

Tried your suggestions previously with each sound setting to as low as it would go(16 bit 44100Hz cd quality) and windowed, no mods, various earlier saves, different pc's, routes etc along with all of the above, still the same ctd on this quest.

Must have spent longer trying to fix it than actual game time and so far I'm stumped!

The only thing I know about corrupt saves(from Fallout 3 experience) is that it often becomes corrupt up to an hour before you start seeing problems, so sometimes you have to go back quite far.
It is incredibly annoying though, sorry you are having so many problems.

I had that too with F3, luckily I got to complete the main game(with an awful lot of perseverance and patience), op anchorage, the pitt and broken steel but eventually lost the rag with point lookout when all the crashes started again.

Strange how it's only Bethseda's titles that I've had bad luck with, the only other game that's became unplayable for me at a certain point that springs to mind was JC2, it only cost me £10 with the full dlc and it was just a 'mad crazy blow everything up riot of a game' that I was never going to complete anyway.

2 out of 3 Bethseda titles have now ran like a dog for me, NV was fine up to the strip(where I left it) but I just can't get into it for whatever reason considering I was engrossed with F3 so much.

If no one sends me a save(c'mon you guys mails in trust;)) I'l probably go further back and try again, but I have a feeling it's not happening for me
