Skyrim anyone else not seeing the hype/popularity

So pretty much EVERYONE I know who owns a PC is going on about this game, and I can't for the life of me figure out why this game is so popular.

I've played Morrowind, and I just didn't get what the point of the game was.

As far as Skyrim goes, an MMORPG, without the MMO part? how does that work, from what I've seen and read about Skyrim, a game like this would benefit so much from having the online multiplayer that World of Warcraft has.

So I thought I'd offer a place for people to talk about why they dislike the game.

Lol I'm not trying to troll honestly, I'm trying to find out why the game is so popular, because I feel so far out of the loop, I'd rather play Tiberium Wars or Battlefield than Skyrim, the whole game just seems pointless to me without the online multiplayer aspect

I didn't buy World of Warcraft purely because I dislike the idea of paying for a game more than once lol.

So can someone explain to me, other than the graphical environments why is the game so popular, it just looks like an updated version of D&D to me.

Surely I can't be the only one who doesn't get it?

Looking at my friends the way they obsess over Skyrim, makes me think they're not too far away from cosplay in the local park

It just doesn't appeal to me on any level, why would anyone want to pretend to be an elf or an orc going round slaying wolves and dragons and stuff. I waste enough hours on games I actually want to play, but RPG's I just don't understand, this coming from a guy who used to play Warhammer 40k

It is basically an escape for people

Doesn't it take over 300 hours to complete the game though, is that healthy? enough kids died playing World of Warcraft and that other game (name escapes me)

I want to like it though, I feel like a proper black sheep because everyone seems obsessed by Skyrim, and I just don't get why? take World of Warcraft for example, there is no way of finishing the game, you just do more and more quests and level up more and more, there is no "once you kill this guy, you win and unlock this" aspect to the game, maybe its because I've grown up playing games like that, that I just don't get it

ok so you dont get it.

understandable

i like racing games and fps titles, i may give skyrim a go soon to see what the fuss is about. but i certainly wouldn't judge someone who liked it if i didn't.

your responses are quite alarming here, either you are just trying to cause a stir or are genuinely unable to see that people have different tastes.

if the game doesn't appeal to you, then play something you do like

Not at all, I'm not trying to cause a stir and I get that people have different tastes, like I said, I want to give the game a go, because all my friends like it, but it just doesn't appeal to me at all, not the all the other games I play do.

I accept that, but I'm failing to see why the game is so popular, am I really being that unclear, CONVINCE ME I LIKE THIS GAME and why I should buy it and be part of the masses, because at the moment, I really just am not getting it.

Probably the same reason I never liked GTA, I just ran round killing people and blowing stuff up until I got the army after me and eventually died lol

I don't like Skyrim, but I feel like I should because people just won't shut up about it so I figure I need to give it a go, even though I really REALLY cannot see the point of chasing dragons on horseback, casting spells etc...

I just refuse to belive that I'm the only person who will not buy into all this Skyrim is a must for everyone who owns a PC crap

I don't get how the thread is Skyrim fail, why don't you like it. So he wants us to tell him why it's crap. Then a few posts down he wants us to tell him why its great. This thread is lol

Skyrim is a fail because I don't like it, yet I feel like I should, so I'm attempting to find other people who don't like it and why, since I haven't found anyone who doesn't like it, then I might as well find out why I am wrong and should like it?

Honestly, is that so difficult

Did the op ever play games before the internet was fast?

For me games always used to be about the story told or the interaction you put in to get the end result (so point + clicks are amazing like management/building games). If these are not the main draws of a game then I'm confused at what is...

Yes, I played games like Dizzy, Sonic, Streets of Rage etc.... games that had an ending

I'm not looking down on others, I'm trying to figure out why the game is so popular because I'm just not seeing it. This is really getting frustrating now

I'm not being insulting
I'm not condemning people for liking it

Maybe I'm just not drinking the same water as you guys lol

I share the OP's sentiment, to be honest. I do think the 'conditioning' of recent MMO's is to blame! Personally, I can't see much point in sinking 300 hours into the grindy and obsessive-compulsive 'I must complete this!' aspects of a game that is entirely single-player and divorced from any other human agent. Surely half of the attraction of getting the best armour and the best gear is to show it off to (and perhaps even compete with) your mates? How can you do that if you're playing in a solipsistic universe, population: one? You're the champion of your own hard-drive's save file, and that is it. Not quite the epic experience that I, for one, can enjoy. It seems to me that RPG's are MMO's for the asocial. Solipsism is probably an apt term, because it is all down to individual imagination and literal as well as figurative 'fantasy' to ape the game experience up in your own mind. A very real element of personal roleplay is involved to become immersed in these games... that willing suspension of disbelief pops up that I simply cannot employ anymore in computer games. "Don't even talk about reading clubs" is a comment that echoes this sentiment-- half of the joy of reading a good book is in sharing your thoughts and discussion with others! Though, saying this, I am desperately seeking a new MMORPG to play in the lacklustre modern PC gaming landscape, and I am a literature postgraduate, so maybe my views are biased :p.

OMG! Someone else who agree's with me! you put it a lot more articulate than me though

I guess I just enjoy a good book when it comes to the supposedly 'deeper' entertainment experience. I find the writing and dialogue in Skyrim to be unbearably cheesy and amateurish, and it completely breaks my immersion and involvement in the game. I'm trying more often not to laugh, or otherwise just trying to suspend my constant interior stream of criticism, than I am becoming engrossed. RPG fans seem to look down their noses quite snootily (at times) at the 'mindless majority' that enjoy an FPS fragfest or an uncomplicated and action-packed gaming experience... but often times forget that fantasy role-playing games seem to be the safe refuge of a deluge of shoddy hack-writers and tired cliché. I can't get into any role-playing universe or its lore because they have all been so poorly developed-- so pastiche. Almost embarrassing. Perhaps the 'mindless fraggers' of the PC gaming world just like to avoid hokey half-baked fantasy novels played out in 3D.

Amen brother

How on Earth do you reach the age at which you can use a computer and visit an online forum yet can't comprehend that people have different tastes yet??

I like Elder Scrolls games and other RPGs, I don't like sports games, racing games or beat 'em ups. Different strokes for different folks.

Dude, I get that people like different things, it would be horrible if we were all the same.

I personally think RPG fans are just namby pamby players that enjoy the sense of being the only heroic figure in a fantasy world :P. You can't bear to share the glory or potential loot with any other player that may dilute and diminish your sense of achievement! Perhaps the online world presents too many challenges for you: skillfully, socially, psychologically. Perhaps.

(I'm kidding, of course, just reacting to all the pointless 'my genre is somehow more worthy than yours' rubbish. He's asking a genuine and sincere question and all you can reply to him is subtle condescension about how he isn't high-brow enough to enjoy walking around a frozen tundra on his lonesome for 200 hours).

At 24, and in full time work, I can afford to buy it, but I am yet to be convinced as to why I should. as InKursion already said, a book or a film does a better job for the 2 of us than a game ever could.

This was going to be my favourite post ever until you said "I'm kidding, or course":(

:p

Oh and i do have a slight doubt that the OP is "asking a genuine and sincere question"

Actually I was asking a genuine question, I WAS trying to find other like-minded people who dislike or just plain, dont get why the game is so popular, but that went out of the window a few hundred posts back lol

Still feel like I'm missing something though, a game that creates this much hype must be good right?

Please don't respond with, either buy it or don't buy it, nobody is sat behind you with a shotgun forcing you to respond, Personally, I feel like just having a conversation with InKursion about why the game is so bad lol

Why did you even make this thread, it's quite clear you aren't going to listen to anyone. You're here to wind people up, it's too obvious. :)

It's as stupid as someone who hates football asking why FIFA is the best selling game in the world. Bizarre, pointless trolling. Unless you are actually that simple, in which case... :(

I'm not here to wind people up, like I said, I'm trying to find other like minded people who don't get what all the hype is about. Like I said, nobody is forcing you to be in this thread, if you don't like what is being said, leave.

sniffy said:
Good for people that enjoy this type of thing, sure. If you don't like the sound of RPGs then it's nothing. Why even make the thread?

Because I feel like I'm missing out on something that looks fairly huge, I'm sure I've said that already

That might be true if you actually enjoyed RPG games. You clearly don't. It's just like Robbo's fifa example. Utterly pointless thread.

Other like minded people who don't enjoy RPG's maybe?

I can't believe that by me saying I don't get Skyrim, all of you jump in this thread that clearly states I dislike the concept of Skyrim, purely to defend it and to say "Skyrim is the best RPG that was ever made and you must play it"

Thus far, in the previous 3 pages, I've only found 1 person who can clearly justify why they dislike the game, the rest of you love the game, so why are you even here?

Why are all you guys hooked on the idea that a gaming discussion forum should just be a list of 'official fan' threads and rapturous applause? Why is it that anyone that doesn't 'get' it is immediately excommunicated? This is your chance to induct someone that is clearly eager to be bitten by the RPG bug into your world of wonder and amazement. Instead all you can do is tell him he's 'not made of the right stuff', as if he's mentally retarded or somehow too slow, or tell him that his thread is fundamentally flawed because it isn't one of the other hundred 'omg! game rules! please post your agreement here!' discussions. Lame.

I just think that playing a game like Skyrim or WoW, you get satisfaction from completing quests/leveling up etc... would it not be better to go rock climbing or cycling and get satisfaction from that instead. The satisfaction from building something yourself e.g. a computer is a lot more self-gratifying that just going into a shop and buying one isn't it?
