I've just finished playing BG3 and thought I'd try Skyrim again, I did play it for a bit on my Xbox years ago and just ended up stopping due to other games. I grabbed the Anniversary Edition from CD keys and was hoping for some suggestions for essential mods. Nothing too game changing though.

SkyUI is the standard 'got to have'.
Unofficial patch -sorts out soooo many bugs.
Then it's all pretty much personal taste and PC power.

Nowadays I tend to Wabbajack everything as I'm too lazy to get stuff working nicely together. Plus having Nexus premium is so cheap and I've used terabytes of mods from them over the years I like to support them (not that having premium is necessary just makes it so much easier)

Current favourite is Lost Legacy. Makes the whole game shiny and new plus you can easily turn off anything you don't want - survival elements, extra UI bits etc.

Well this is irritating me! Downloaded a few mods manually, found Vortex installer so used that. Everything seemed ok but SkyUI disables itself on every startup. Realised it crashes every time I press esc. Read it was to do with Vortex so uninstalled that, manually removed the mods then installed Mod Organizer 2. I'm manually adding mods from downloaded files and it shows in the app but when i fire up Skyrim there aren't any mods loaded. Loot is showing no supported games regardless of me starting up the game.

If you use SkyUI, then you need SKSE installed and if you use SKSE then the game is launched with skse64 loader rather than Skyrimse.exe. That might be your problem.

Yep got that far. Mod Organiser has a run option for SKSE. Figured out it is instanced so doesn't stick the mods in the game folder. When i click run it starts then ends without loading the game though. When I run the sort option in Mod Organiser LOOT runs but each mod says missing masters, all like dawnguard.esm, dragonborn.esm etc. I thought these were part of the anniversary edition but Mod Organiser can't see them for some reason.

Don't do it! Modding Skyrim is like crack, a little bit moreish....

I was pretty happy with my setup - a few could be tweaked and/or better mods available now and there was 1-2 things I'd have liked to have changed.

HighResTexturePack (Official)
Milky Way Galaxy Texture - makes the night time look 10x better.
The Cartographers Map Markers
SkyUI (requires SKSE - also with SKSE installed in steam you have to launch that to start the game rather than launching Skyrim as normal)
HQ Snow texture (I did try some other snow mods but they were mostly over the top - planning on revisiting that at some point)
A quality world map with roads (there are better ones but I think that is the best that is on the steam workshop)
Pure Waters
Rocks2K Special Edition
Dat Grass (you really don't want to install this unless you have a stupidly high end system and other mods to enhance the overall look)
Improved interior lighting (think you need to use one of the realistic lighting mods to make the most of this one but I'm using ENB instead at the moment)
Immersive saturation boost

I had some ugrid and other tweaks which unfortunately I've not documented and can't get stable now :( which annoyed me a lot as it massively enhances the game when you have high detail trees, etc. drawn right to the horizon and an overall more active world around you. I can't remember my ENB settings.

My goal was playing through the original game mostly as intended just enhancing it rather than fundamentally changing it though.

Well that was odd just reselected my instance in Mod Organiser and all the ones it couldn't see have appeared.

Everything looks good now, game won't start through the Mod Organiser though...... This is incredibly irritating.

Missed a notification, Form 43 or lower plugin detected. If i deselect the plugins it mentions the game starts, i've definitely downloaded the mods from the SE section of Nexus though and i know they worked outside of Mod Manager.

Form 43 is an Oldrim plugin so wont work with the SE version. The mod author might have uploaded the wrong file ? What mod is it ?

There were a few, immersive weapons, immersive wenches, skyrim flora overhaul and icepengiun world map. I managed to update 2 of them to form 44 but they still didn't work. Have disabled them and the game loads fine, would be good if i could get working versions before i start playing the game.

Hmm I used them all some time ago in 2021/22 and they were working fine together. You sure you downloaded them from the below site of Nexus and not Old Skyrim part of it ? I done that mistake myself in the past without realizing it first !

Quite possibly actually as it doesn't say I've downloaded them, I think I did it direct through vortex originally then googled them for my next attempt. Will try these ones and see, thanks.

Now I have to work out how to get round the reserved keys for the key binds. I uses a 12 button mouse with them all mapped to the keypad numbers and symbols.
