Sleep (and eventually Hibernate) versus Shut Down

Hi all,

Thought I'd get the general consensus amongst y'all.

What method do you use for your home PC and/or Laptop.

Do you:
Put the computer to sleep when not in use, so it is immediately ready when you come back to it?
Put the computer into Hibernation mode so you can start from where you left off, but the computer is otherwise off?
Shut down the computer completely and start it up again when next needed?

Pls post hard drive type as well (HDD/SSD).

Personally on my laptop, I used to use sleep/hibernate exclusively as it took for EVER to boot from cold. Although now I have updated to an SSD I am starting to wonder whether I need to use sleep/hibernate to keep things loaded when the SSD boots so fast...

What say you!

Sleep my computer, because shutting down uses the same amount of power from the wall unless I turn it off at the socket too.

I've gotten used to not waiting for it to turn on so rarely shut down.

SSD, so yeah I guess it boots up quick enough but I've got my PC setup to sleep after 10 mins of idling.

Although when booting up into Windows 10, it's not as fast as it used to be with Windows 7, even though I'm using a local account.

With a laptop though I'd shut it down unless I had work open and it'd be a pain to open it all again.

Not sure about the newer OS's but on my older Vista laptop I never used sleep, it seemed to just create too many issues. Shutting down, clearing the ram/cache/swapfile whatever - I think is best and you come back each start up to a fresh system.

sleep with an hd - I want to preserve the state of the browser and other applications so I can restart quick from same point the next day (hibernate would be slow on hd, maybe less so on ssd).
sleep continues to use the battery unlike hibernate, so since i normally keep an old battery in win 7 laptop, that now stores little charge, have to keep mains connected too otherwise it will later hibernate (daily drip charge on a good battery degrades its life i believe - comments ?)

windows 10 tablets(laptops?) have hybrid sleep which i disable and use normal sleep, since linx brand anyway, consumes a lot under hybrid mode and sometimes wireless/bluetooth has problems re-connecting after resume (usually use tablet exclusively not connected to mains and re-connect for recharge when necessary)

Windows 10 plus SSDs has made sleep or hibernate redundant on my PC. Takes 10 seconds to turn on and log in so not even worth bothering with sleep or hibernate.

I use hibernate on my work laptop (also W10 and an SSD) but only because it means I can leave stuff open from one day to the next.

I've always shut down fully, boots up in seconds on an SSD. Although now I'm tempted to try sleep mode after reading this thread!

Pretty much on all day but shutdown overnight. Dont bother with sleep anymore with super fast boot times these days. Plus I like things fresh when it boots. :)

I use shutdown for my desktop and sleep for my laptop. Desktop is something I use for extended periods then leave it for ages. Laptop I like to pick up and use for a few minutes, then put down, then pick up and put down.

On and active 24/7, screen off when not in use.

Booo! :P

I think, on reflection, I am going to start using shutdown more. Seeing as I have an SSD now it takes literately no time at all to load the system, so why not? I will continue to use sleep/hibernate if I need to start from where I left off.

Previously, as mentioned, when I had a normal HDD I would use sleep/hibernate as the boot times was SOOOOOOOOOO LOOOOOOONG!
