Sleep Patterns

Once you are asleep you sleep in cycles of 90 minutes. So idealy you should sleep like this 12 (midnight) > 1.30am > 3.00am > 4.30 > 6.00am (wake up at 6.00am)

You see that it's better waking up at 6.00am than 7.00am as there is a chance the body is in a lighter sleep making it easy to get up than being in a heavy dream state. However it's very possible to spend over an hour 'trying' to sleep which would mean that insted of six hours it's more like 7 hours, this would differ from person to person depending on a lot of factors such as diets and stress levels. Usually if you wake up at these times you'll feel your dream and it'll be very powerful, some people who lucid dream or explore this do this on purpose so they can write word asscoates or voice record what they are dreaming.

In general goto bed the same time every day, the human body adapts to this, also avoid the likes of caffiene a few hours before as this will make it harder. Alcohol doesn't help either although it knocks you out, the quality of your sleep is much affected.

Another tip is to have your alarm clock radio wake you up VERY quiet ... if your in a heavy sleep then it wont filter through to you properly ... once your sleep cycle is over you'll hear it and wake up. Loud buzzing alarms aren't good IMO, I always ignore them and carry on sleeping as I find they interupt me. :(

Usually I sleep 6 hours, although I can get by with 4.5 hours.

Its something to do with circadian or infradian rhythms in your body, your sleep cycle falls under one of those two iirc. You'll go through several cycles during the night where you are in deep sleep at one point, and will come up to a light sleep or whats called REM sleep when you are most 'awake' or susceptible to disturbance or least 'asleep' it could be said.

Pretty sure thats correct, or something to that effect!

you have 5 dreams a night going from 10 minutes to 45 minutes, the last one being longest.

As for sleeping length.

8 hours for adults
10 hours for children
as much as possible for Teens

Yes that's true. Check out this.

As you can see once the person sleeps his body becomes more relaxed as it falls deeper and deeper into a dream state, then he partly wakes up for a moment and drops out into R.E.M. mode. Once the dream is finshed he partly wakes up and it starts over.

Usually you don't remember dreams, it's as if they are 'overwriten' also, sometimes that day you'll feel a flashback effect to your dream which will make it become rememberable.

i tend to get about an hours sleep at night before waking up again.this happens 5-6 times through the night, even if im shattered,il get an hours sleep at max.

We have a new baby, and I'm struggling to get into a deep restful sleep at the moment. Four hour naps are the norm and it's knackering me slowly. SWMBO and I are trying to give each other a decent rest, but I, for one, seem to need to sleep for more than four hours to make it worthwhile.

Kids, eh? Tried ear plugs, I know it's hard to drown out a kids cry?

In the early 80's I had a week at Keele Uni while I was experimented on.
I get by easily on 4 hours and no matter what time I go to bed I will wake at 6:15am.
I also have the ability to go into deep sleep as soon as I fall asleep.
I was told that the average person hits REM around 90 mins but I hit it straight away making for less hours sleep needed.

How is your lighting and are there any sounds that make arise you?

everything is off when i try to sleep, double glazin windows keep most noises out,no noise in house because everyone is asleep hours before.
been happening about 2-3years ago now,i do 5am until 5pm now so sleeping through the night is hard because no matter what,i wake up in an hour or so

I find that I simply cannot sleep with the windows closed. Every single night I have to have them open, otherwise it gets just too hot in my bed. Hot summer nights when there's no air have always been hell for me. Usually on such nights I can't get a wink of sleep.

I am also advantageous in my sleeping patterns, as 99% of the time if I need to be up at, say, 8 in the morning, then I will wake up at that time. I also never feel tired in the morning after waking up. I'm nearly wide awake as soon as I wake up.

Could it be linked to depression?

Um, maybe a thermometer, and cool down your room before you sleep? Unless you don't mind the window open, usually it doesn't matter but some people (ie, myself) have them loft windows where if it rains, the rain enters the room damaging my TV, etc

A fan and timer might also be a suggestion.

Must be a pain if you go on holiday where it's real hot (like Turkey or Spain) and your sleeping on them little apartment beds while it's like 40C. I can never sleep on holiday - it's not the same as home. :)

My sleeping pattern atm is, being awake 14-16 hours, then sleep for 11-12 hours, keeps shifting my pattern forward :(.

And bah waking up during REM sleep is the worst imo, god knows how many times I wasn't able to see the outcome of a dream because something woke me up ( mostly my alarm). It's really starting to **** me off, waking up exactly during rem sleep during a nice dream. I like waking up during the other sleep cycles...

I believe it's best to sleep in multiples of 4 hours, is this correct? Would you feel better if you adhered to that? I have a really, really hard time actually waking up and mustering the will to get out of bed, even when it's 8:45 and I need to be at work for 9...

It's not just me is it?

I'm half agreeing with you, and half the opposite.
I do feel better when waking up after about 4 hrs of sleep then after 5, 6 or 7... But can't do it too often as it'll start destroying ya through the day due to tiredness later on...
I'm having trouble to get up when I don't have to, eg. my mum tells me to buy some clothes and meet up with her at 4pm, I just cba to get out of bed and sleep on till 6 pm...

When I do have to get up, eg. for school, I usually have no trouble getting up, but only if I ''have'' to, eg. when I plan to get up earlier to have more time for eating, bathroom, perhaps even a workout in the morning or a quick game, I usually cba to get up already and just postpone it till I ''really'' have to. Even for fun activity's I refuse to get up, I just can't ever be arsed to get up earlier than 1pm during weekends, and earlier than 3 pm during holidays...
I have to be at school at 8.30 am for my earliest lessons sometimes, and that means that when I set my alarm @ 7.30, I really have trouble getting out and wanna stay in as I feel knackered, but when it's 8.10am, I usually have no trouble jumping out of bed and don't really feel that tired really.

Some kind of physiological thing I guess .

Always sleep with the windows open, doesn't bother me although I have to keep them closed when the lights are on so no mosquitoes come in. But without windows open it's terrible, it gets hot, it gets smelly, it even sometimes gives me Dyspnea if I sleep without my windows open. I love fresh air always and anywhere.

im not depressed, got a steady job and relationship,no debts, nothing.i might just be weird :)

It could be anything, from your partner snoring to your health.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea

Sleep apnea is very common, you basically stop breathing and it can cause you to wake up. Perhaps your partner has it and when he stops breathing you wake up automatically. Very common in overweight people, even a few stone extra can bring it on.

I have it, just stop breathing for up to around 30 secs according to the other half, she has got used to it now. Its also a lot worse when my hayfever starts my asthma up. It is so bad that I wake up coughing and can sometimes be very ill.

Anyway, what ever it is, get yourself to the doctors and tell them you haven't been sleeping right for years and its effecting you by being tired etc.
