Sleeping problem

I think its something about the chemical your body releases when your asleep to stop you acting out your dreams. A bit like the opposite of sleep walking, perhaps sleep walking is a lack of this chemical and sleep paralysis is too much of this chemical. That all seems reasonable and scientific to me, the part I cant make sense of is the demonic experiences people report while being paralysed. Every time it happened to me, there was a groaning noise in my ears and the feeling of a presence in the room.

The demonic story came from the time when a lot of people believed in that stuff, it was thought that a demond is on your back thats why you can't move.

As I said sometimes people hallucinate (see demons and other stuff) as reality can be mixed up with the dream from which you've just awoken.

Yeah, sleep paralysis, I've gotten it too a few times (very rarely). I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it's somehow related to sleep apnoea (when you stop breathing in your sleep, more than is normal that is, as everyone stops breathing in their sleep a few times a night). Am i right or did I imagine the link there?

It's weird that it only happens to you at your parents, I'd put it down to stress as well, unless maybe the mattress or pillow is different there than what you're used to? Sleep on your side and try an extra pillow to elevate your head more.

The OP sounds like it is a waking problem, not a sleeping one.

How does sleep paralysis effect your actual sleep.
When you "semi wake up" as you put it, just lie there until you do fully wake up and can move normally?

Yeah I would say im in the paralysis for at most 10seconds, focus on moving my arm and I fully wake. It generally happens to me after 2-4hours sleep, this is the main reason for me wanting to get rid of it. As by waking once, on occasion twice in the middle of the night significantly reduces the quality of sleep.

As I said im not really overly stressed or anything, not going through anything I havent done before, just seems to be related to sleeping back home. As I have exams I would rather not have broken sleep and be knocked out for a good 6-7hours straight

Sleep paralysis - not a nice thing - I had a period of 'attacks' recently - lasted about 6 months. Terrible things. Would get one pretty much every other night or so. I know I wanted to wake up, but I couldn't move or do anything. I tried to move, or nudge the missus and get her to wake me, but couldn't. Brrrrrrrr - not nice even thinking about them.

Mine have tapered off by themselves, but I was very stressed at the time and am much more relaxed now. If they continue - GP?

As others (inc. me) have said before:
1. don't sleep on your back
2. make sure you're comfortable (good mattress, pillow etc.)
3. wind down before sleep (ie. don't revise up until you go to bed, stop half an hour beforehand and chillax before sleeping!)

I have only had one experience of this, it completely terrified me as I didn't know about it before it happened, felt like a massive weight on my chest which made it hard to breathe and I was completely unable to move, thankfully it wasn't accompanied with hallucinations.

I got straight on Google and found out about it which put me at ease somewhat, you can understand people blaming it on demons and such if they don't know about it.

I don't know how you would go about stopping it though.

The internet is full of the solution you need, it;s hard to avoid it.
you could google just about anything and find what you really need.

I've seen it referred to on here before, basically it feels like you're half awake and being held down but you cant wake properly and move for a few seconds.

Thing is I only get this when I stay at my parents house, every single time and as im back to avoid distractions for revision, this isntthe greatest thing.

Anyone know of any possible remedies as I do not fancy dying from lack of sleep daily while trying to revise?

Sounds like your dad is drugging you. Call the police.

I must be a completely godless cynic, the next morning I thought I had just had a really bad dream about being paralysed! :p It wasn't till years later I found out what it was!

:D

It was the weight on the chest that got me, really gave the impression that something was pushing down on me, and I knew I was definetely awake.
