SLI cable

Cable?

You'll have a PCB bridge connector supplied with the motherboard as Jokester has said. You'll also need to set the switch on the motherboard (or if it's not in the motherboard through software)

so its motherboard specific?

I just have two OEM 7800GTX cards from some workstations, I thought they might be like the old 3dfx jobbies which were connected by a ribbon cable, I can see an edge connector on the cards so thought thats how they joined together :(

Well, you need an SLi capable motherboard and that should be supplied with the SLi bridge which connects to both cards on the small connector. It is like a ribbon cable and should come with your motherboard.

the sli bridge looks like this

You cant... they come with the motherboard and are (sometimes) specific to that board. the spaces between the PCi-E slots can be different you see so a connector that works on one mainboard wont always work on another. You cannot buy these bridge pieces from anywhere but maybe the board manufactures direct.

My current motherboard came with a strange SLI bridge. Unlike my old which was flat and solid, this one is flexible and bendy.

Old motherboard was Asus A8N-SLI
New one is Asus A8N-SLI SE

Only fault I can pick with the SE is that the onboard sound is only 2 channel, allthough you can change in the sound properties to have center and rear going out through the microphone and line in ports.
