Can someone recommend the best motherboard with the widest pci express
''sli '' gap that i can run 2 msi gtx 980ti gaming with, thanks, i currently have the ASUS Z97 Maximus VII Hero, any suggestions would be great, thanks

The Asus Z97 v pro has a 2 slot gap. Unfortunately all the ROG boards wether on Z8/97 only have a one slot gap. I ran non ref windforce 780's in the board in sig. At times the top card did get as high as 85c, but usually mid 70's. Bottom one never above 65c.

Or the Asus Z97 Pro Gamer.
Yep, pastymuncher had suggested the pro gamer. A two slot gap can make quite a difference with non ref cards. Prior to moving to Z87, i ran sli windforce 670's in a two slot gap Z77 asus v pro. The cards ran a bit cooler than they did when i switched to the Z87 board in sig.

Wanted a bit of a higher end board though :/ those are the lower end of the spectrum im thinking, i can always water cool the cards i suppose but that's a big investment

No need for a high end board tbh, I shelled out £260.00 for the board in sig. Yes its feature rich and looks the part. But id have got the same overclock out of a cheaper board.

Can someone tell me what the problem is?

I run the same Mobo as the OP with 970SLI and there is more than an inch gap between them and cooling is not a problem, both cards run within 3~4c of each other at idle and in game.
