I bought a 9600GT a while ago off overclockers, its the cheap one they do with no branding, anwyay i just seen another cheap one made by asus. It has the same specs as my card but would it work in SLI still?

As above, and also bear in mind 9600GTs have excellent scaling in SLi so it's a worthwhile upgrade.

how well two cards perform compared to just one.

if two cards perform only a little bit better than one, that's poor upscaling. if two cards perform a lot better than one, that's good upscaling.

Scaling is basically how well two cards do compared to one. Two should always be better than one (although there have been cases where two turns out worse), but they'll virtually never be twice as good.

SLI is basically best when you buy a card at mid-range (as the 9600 probably was when you bought it) then adding another later on at a lower price.
