the 174s working out great for me with (tri)sli 8800gtxs
overheating in sli caused me to have probs after gaming for while so added some extra cooling. does sound like power though. hope the psu works out

Well it looks like the new PSU has done the job. Tested now for a good few hours and not one single crash so far. It does look like my system did not like the Gigabyte 800 psu, and the Tagan 1100 has taken over 
I did add an extra 120mm fan at low speed on the side of the case to help cool the sli'd Gfx cards, and they are also now running about 10c cooler.
