SLI Vs Xfire

just out of intrest, does SLI have the same issues as XFire with certain games? which is more stable/compatible? is one easier to setup over the other?

it depends on your pc and how its setup...choose one and go experience it for yourself,there both the same to setup

i am getting an i7 with an xfire mobo which will support sliif i do a bios update. i have a 9800GTX+ at the moment and have been pointed in the HD5770 dirrection. but upon reading i found a few people complaining that there are issues with certain things with xfire so wondered whether i would be better going down nvidias route, if and when the release them at a reasonable price.

A fast single GPU solution will be your best bet. i.e. 5850

yeah thats what i figured, but financially i could afford 1 HD5770 then another one in a few months time.

People have problems with single cards just as much as crossfire if you read these forums. Some people have no problems at all. How many times do you see folks posting about Nvidia\Ati driver problems. How many times do folks post saying they are happy and have no problems, they are by far the majority. Dont be put off trying something like crossfire or sli because of a few posts. I wasn't and so far its been great.

I would just bite the bullet and give a dual card setup a go, whether it's sli or crossfire, both work on the same premise and ultimately achieve the same goal.

As most people would say a single card setup will most likely provide a slightly more stable fps count, but when there is a chance of anything up to twice as much fps, any quick blips in fps will still probably end up higher than a single card solution.

Try it, if it doesn't float your boat, 5770's will probably be easy to sell on ebay or something.

They are both fairly good implementations these days... performance difference/scaling is neither here nor there... I'd say SLI was slightly more mature/featured having had application profiles for a long time, SLI AA so the second card isn't completely wasted in titles that don't support SLI (yet) and being a lot more tweakable at the advanced level by the end user should you wish.

Multi GPU has its place but IMO its not the first thing to look at... a single card of similiar or better performance for upto the same cost as 2x slower cards is always better... however there are situations where multi GPU is worth considering - one being when your playing at high resolution and need more performance than the current fastest single card and the other are those times when a mid-range card in pair works out faster or as fast as a faster card at a similiar or cheaper price point.

Multi card setup efficiency is based primarily on the programs you use. Unreal engine games run better on Nvidia. Engines such as the Farcry 2 engine run better on ATI. There are more examples but I've had one drink too many to look for them atm. Basing it purely on GPUs available, go for 5770s crossfired or save until you can get your hands on a 5850/70, Nvidia's lineup has been shaken up by them End-of-lining half their range, resulting in higher prices for cards which can be had cheaper from ATI. That's why prices for the new ATI cards have remained higher, those *******s!
