I'm a little confused here.

If a game doesn't support SLI can you "force it"?

If it doesn't support it does it just drop to a single NV card?

u can not force it and u will play a game with single gpu/graphics card. why u ask u have 4870x2 :P

Because I'm speaking to someone who has is saying that in most games you can force SLI in hardware or make a profile so it supports it and doesn't just default to a single card.

SLI works at a driver level, it's got nothing to do with whether a game supports it or not. All the game profiles do that are built into the driver is configure the best SLI mode for each game to maximise performance.

If you don't have a profile for a new game for example you can manually select which mode to use and check it yourself to see what works best. If you don't see a performance increase it's more than likely due to you being CPU bottlenecked rather than the game "not supporting" SLI.

You can force SLI on in any mode on almost any application but without a profile you might not get the best gains from it and some games render in such a way that its not possible to gain any extra performance from it or even results in a decrease in performance...

You can use something like nHancer to play around manually.

So howcome the initial release of Crysis was exactly the same speed on SLI as a single card yet subsequent updates fixed this issue and it was then faster?

Sounds to me like the initial release didn't work with SLI and they then fixed the problem.

Actually first release of crysis worked ok with SLI (only about 50% gains tho) if you knew how to configure the profile manually...

Certain effects, especially if you need to reference information from previous frames don't work too well with SLI but drivers or the game can be tweaked to work better avoiding certain pitfalls - which is why some games have a multi-GPU option.
