Slick hi-def KVM switching, DisplayPort or DVI?

I am at the specification stage of two new Windows 7 desktop PCs that will share a yet to be purchased 30" display running at 2560 x 1600. Is KVM switching via DisplayPort or DVI viable at this resolution and would there be any loss of display quality?

I anticipate spending 90% of my time on 1 PC in any working hour with say 5 KVM switchs an hour. A 5 second switch delay would be acceptable.

I think my options are:

  1. Use the dual inputs of the display but will the display's input switch buttons have a duty cycle that will hold up to 5 years of routine switching?
  2. Use a high-end KVM switch.
  3. KVM Switch just keyboard & mouse but crank my neck around to a second display. I suspect this will do my neck in long term.

What about remote desktop?

Does depend on what you want to do, but generally I've found this to be the easiest way to do this unless you want to be swapping mid application etc.

I use the Aten CS682 2 Port USB DVI KVM Switch which I find great.

So I have 1 KB & mouse and can share those and 1 DVI monitor between 2 PC's, it prob takes 2 secs max (if that) to switch between them.

~£50 from online retailers

(In fact I have 2 of them now as I have 3 monitors - the gaming machine uses 3 for Nvidia surround and I share 2 monitors with my work PC)

**Edit** I've just checked and they only go up to 1920 x 1200 screen res

Thanks all, I suppose I should investigate the RDC option further. One motivation is that the primary computer should never be used for web surfing or have a direct internet connection.

I suppose if I have a dual LAN port in each PC, the RDC could run over a direct cross over lan connection between the two PCs. If I then manually firewall the inner PC to allow only the RDC port number things should be pretty safe no matter how compromised the outer browsing PC becomes.

no need to mess with dual lan, just manually assign the IP settings and don't set a default gateway
