My parents have hundreds of old slides that I'm thinking of scanning.

Can anyone suggest how I go about this? I've got a normal cheap Canon flatbed scanner but presumably I need a special scanner for this type of thing...?

Thanks in advance.

You need a special scanner, but some normal scanners have adapters to enable them to scan negatives, some of them being Canon. What model do you have?

If you can't get one, then have a look at the HP Scanjet 4850 or the Summit Photofix USB film & Slide Copier. They're both around £100.

Thanks for the reply - I've got a Canon CanoScan Lide 25 - fairly basic but does the job.

I see that [somewhere] sell the Summit one, I'll look into the HP one too.

Edited, thanks.

No, I can't find an adapter either.

I'm having trouble finding out much about the Summit device - lot's of people asking whether it's actually any good but no answers to be found. Has anyone got any experience of it or any links to reviews?

Thanks.

Before you can decide on what scanner you need to think what your are going to do with the scans... Just view on screen ? print ? enlarge ?... Plus what condition are they in, clean ? or dusty and a few marks ?
You might want to think of a S/H Nikon Film scanner, with ICE, to clean everything up.

Thanks for the tips - They're old slides (30 years in some cases) so probably not in the best nick.

The scans don't need to be excessively good quality, mostly they'll either be looked at on a computer or printed at 6" x 4"

My dad just bought a 'Veho VFS-001 5MP Slide And Negative Photo Scanner' which seems to do a good job. Thirty year old slides have turned out quite well. Worth a look :)
