Hi All,

I have an HP microserver N40L that I have setup freenas 8.3, and i'm getting some strange results while testing network speeds.

I have done some tests by copying some large files to my laptop from the HP vs My PC (both connected to a gigabit switch, then on to the router). Tests were both wireless and wired. Here are the results.

Wired:
From HP approx 50 to 67 MB/s
From PC approx 76 to 80 MB/s

Wireless:
From HP approx 1.20 MB/s
From PC approx 2.42 MB/s

I can understand the difference in wired speeds as I guess the limitation here is the HDD speed?

I'm a little confused by the difference in wifi speeds though, I expected these to be approximately the same... since the Wifi is provided by the router, which is then connected to the same switch as the HP and PC.

Can anyone explain a reason for this?

Thanks guys

The HP and the PC will not go through the router, they will only talk over the switch.

Hi Harry, yes i realise this, all reading were taken from my laptop to either the main PC or from the laptop to the Freenas machine. The First results were with the laptop connected via ethernet to the same switch as the PC & NAS. The sceond results were with the laptop connected via wireless.

The wireless router (not wireless n) is connected to the switch via an eithernet connection, and the distance between the laptop and the router was a few feet at the most.

I was a bit confused at how slow the wireless transfer speed was, but even more confused by the difference in wireless transfer speed between the laptop and PC, and the laptop and NAS, considering its all the same network hardware...

Wireless G was never great at real world transfer speeds. Wireless N is only good at transfer speeds when you've got really good kit.

Still not a patch on using ethernet.
