Slimserver and NASes

Was originally going to stick a couple of hard drives in an old system and run a Linux OS and stick it in a cuopboard and use it as a combination Network Server/Backup device and for Slimserver.

Having spent hours this afternoon trying to get to grips with Linux, I think I'm coming to the conclusion that it is a right royal PITA as I know nearly nothing about anything other than Windows!

So I think I'm going to get an enclosure for the drives and ideally have the Squeezebox running off it.

God knows - thought it would be a simple use of some old bits of kit but it's turning out to be bloody hard work, may end up just buying a dedicated box of tricks for it!

I tried Ubuntu & Slimserver, bit long winded but managed to get it to work. XP Home and Slimserver is dead easy, and should be stable. It's faster than a NAS- re-building a database on a SS NAS will take ages. Also costly, and limited upgrade potential.

Was thinking about going down the whole XP route as have my old disks lying around, just thought Linux might be quite easy - how naive! Will see how I get on with the current setup but don't thnk it's long before I end up sticking on XP or buying a dedicated NAS box to do it for me.!

I have squeezecenter running on a qnap 209pro.

The web interface is so slow it is almost unusable but navigating via the squeezebox is ok.
Running squeezecenter seems to kill the transfer rates on the qnap

approx 19 MB/sec read, 23 MB/sec write without sc running
approx 9MB/sec read, 9MB/write with sc running

Ouch! I suspect a similar thing is happening on my network - I'm using Powerline ethernet instead of hard wiring or wireless and if I have my laptop and PC on at the same time, it seems to kill the transfer rates. I suppose it can't cope with so many connections.

Had a reply from someone on a Linux forum that may have sorted out the problem I had accessing my home built NAS, but then one of my new Maxtor drives seems to have had a fit and the RAID array is currently being rebuilt, so don't know if it is solved yet.

I love the way anything on a PC sounds so simple when you start off and then rapidly gets complicated. Would be great if it "just worked" but I suppose if I wanted that, I'd just buy a Mac and then where would the fun be?!
