I´ve just built a new PC 4gb ram, intel quad 6600 Asus mobo.

I installed Vista ultimate on it and it´s taking 5 minutes to start up and it took 5 hours to install COD4!!! everything is very slow

I installed XP Pro 32 Bit on it.. and it performs as fast as i expected

I installed Vista Home Premium from an Acer recover disk i had laying around 32 bit again and once again it´s quick

Does anyone have any idea why Vista ultimate would be so slow

I've found since moving to Vista about a week ago that it's been quite disk intensive. So I downloaded a nice free defrag software from the makers of CCleaner, it's called Defraggler.

So far it's taken nearly 8 hours on and off and it's still defragging my main drive. It's found 9Gb of Fragmented files!

It's about halfway through now and already the PC is x10 more responsive.

Perhaps try a defrag mate, and like people have told me, disable the automated Windows Defender scans and turn off the power features (or at least set it to Performance). Try and disable any unnecesary services as well.

That won´t account for the fact that the install was on a new disk and that 32 bit Vista works fine.

Out of interest have you tried 64bit with 2gb of ram? When I tried vista, 2gb was considerably faster, I had to make some bios changes (cant remember what) to speed up vista64 with 4gb.
Still prefer xp though :p

I think I must be lucky so far as I don't seem to have had any major problems with Vista x64 yet, only minor issues and that was X-Fi related. Tested TF2, Portal and HL2 and they seem to run as good as XP and the level loading time in Portal was halved. I was prepared for a huge battle and several posts on here but I'm impressed at how easy it has been, I had more problems with the 32-bit version of Vista when I gave that a go last year.

I've never had a single issue with any version of Vista x64, it has run smoothly. It depends on the configuration sometimes though, whether people have problems.

I've had a load of battles with the start menu, i always customise mine, don't want every bloody company advertising their name in my start menu, i like it organised by task. Vista can get awfulyl confused when you manually modify it, apart from that mine runs fine though
