I recently had a my ADSL account changed when i moved house.. And although i am now further from the nearest exchange i am getting some pretty poor connection speeds..

My Linksys Router says the DSL line has connected at 4512kbps Down / 448kbps Up

Which to me seems pretty reasonable consider i am paying for 8mbps but live quite far from the exchange. However my download speeds using "Speedtest.net" are:

312kbps Down / 50kbps Up .. with a ping of 43ms.. So i am a bit baffled.

EDIT: I have removed my cordless phone and now using corded one.. the BT quiet line test seems to be fine noise free. So i am still baffled as to why its so bad?

ISP is UKonline btw. Ideas welcome.

Phone your ISP and ask if they can provide any detailed info on how the line is performing. It may be that you have a low signal strength and a different model of router would perform better under these conditions.

Rgds

If you're connecting at 4512kbps and getting 312kbps, it's got nothing to do with "signal strength".

Try a speedtest that isn't garbage, like watching the average downloading a file from here?

Tried that.. i get a steady 35 kBytes/s .. so not very good either way  I'll givev them a ring when i get home tonight to see if i can get the issue resolved.

They have informed me that BT are currently testing ADSL MAX at my exchang to ensure its all configured correctly which can cause massive fluctuations in speeds and is the likely cause of this. So i have to see how it is after the 10 day period..

"This circuit is on an adsl MAX BT wholesale system so there is a 10
day training period on new lines while the system works out the best
sync and IP profile so during this time your speeds may vary
considerably - sadly we are unable to raise a case or investigate
until this training period is up as BT usually require their system to
generate stats on this line for later diagnosis."

... bit annoying.

So you're using something via BT Wholesale, rather than UK Online's LLU?

Try the BT Speedtest - it should show what your IP profile is set to.
