Thought this was the right place to post this, as it's kind of a HD problem, ish... any ways.

When opening a picture ( i.e. a jpeg ) from the desktop only, it takes ages, for the picture to load, i use microsofts data / fax viewer thing to open pics. The program opens up straight away, but i get "Generating picture... " or somthing along those lines for a good 5 - 8 seconds, it should be instant.

This only happens when opening pictures from the desktop, when i open pics from any other location they open up instantly. Wierd.

Was woundering if any one has every came across somthing like this, it's a small thing but it's enugh to get on my nervs lol, any one got any thing that might help. I've de-fragged the disk, and searched google, but can't find anything.

And don't realy wanna re-install my OS just a silly thing like that.

Thanks guys,

NachT

I had this problem once with my system and found that it was when i had shortcuts or mappings to drives/folders which were no longer accessible (such as a network share where the computer was turned off etc), after removing them, the pictures would then show in a instant.

Oh i see, i do have a few shortcuts to my storage drive on my desktop, i also have a shortcut to a shared folder on my desktop, and the computer with the share on it is off.

I'll try this out, thanks mate! :D

so even if the file you are opening is completely unrelated, if that folder contains inaccessible shares etc then it will slow down considerably?

Thats really strange but will try and remember that

I have heard that everything on your desktop is "loaded" into RAM for instant accessibility, which is why its always beneficial to have shortcuts there instead of the actual file

lol cool, i've just had a chance to try this out as i've been busy, and it works :p

who would have thought hehe, deleted the shortcut to a share on another computer that was not on, and now they load instantly.

Does this only effect pictures? or would anything els have more.. speed improvments?

Thanks mate :D
