Hi all

I've just built my mum and dad a new and there first computer.

AMD 64x2
Abit KN9 Nforce ultra board
Geil 1gig Ram PC 6400 800mhz
Asus ATI Radeon x1650.

When i built it up it seems fine and loaded up very quick.

But over the course of the week it's took ages to boot up and sometimes it's just stuck on the xp logo with the moving bar in themiddle and nothing happens. I'm talking 3mins nearly before desktop comes up.

I've unplugged the sky broadband router in case it was that but it's still the same. Reseated the memory. I've even brought back a image from ghost i did just in case my mum or dad messed something up as there learning how to use a computer. But it's still the same slow very slow boot ups.

what else can i do or check?.

I was thinking of using one of my old SATA drives to put a OS on and see if that was any better?

I'm really looking for some ideas and help please people?

Thanks.

when u start windoes u will only start windows not 100 other things running in the background

start < run < msconfig < startup < untick everything > reboot

Tried that did nothing.

I swapped the hard drives over and put a older SATA drive of mine in and installed windows again and it boots up within seconds now! .

So maybe there's a problem with the hard drive?

I'm going to format it and see if it works after that again.

Did you run a full format before installing the OS for the first time on the new drive? (Full formats include error checking, wheras the quick format does not.)

Might be your IP settings if you are using a router. The router might not be dishing out an IP in a timely fashion. If you are using a router make your IP static this can speed up boot times.

Disable the network adapter and reboot, if it is quicker thats your answer.

Firstly, what HDD do you have..

Secondly, it might be worth running memtest86+. I would always recommend running this after a new system build/and/or new memory installed.

I had a simular problem a while back.. Booting was terribly slow but windows preformance was ok. Turned out to be faulty RAM.

Yeah i did a full format on the new disc and then set it up using western digital's set up tools for a hard disc. I have loads of there drives and do all my drives this way and they've been fine.

I've checked the ip settings and everything is fine. And to prove they are fine i did the same to the new disc i put it when i set the system up again and it works fine?

Which X2 do you have.. I've just noticed this on the BIOS update:

Fixed the issue that the system sometimes may not be able to boot when install the CPU A64 X2 3800+ "ADA3800IAA5CU".

Also, what HDD do you have (model).

You didn't mention anything about running memtest86+??
