Slow, cheap android performance increase?

Hey guys, I've recently got a phone which is only temp but I really want to be able to use Skype.

The phone is the Orange Stockholm and I know this phone has really low specs.
I've isntalled Skype but I'm not sure if I'm just being unrealistic.

Is there anything I can do to increase the performance?

I'm not sure if this should be posted in this are.

Also, what is rooting? how risky is it and would I get much of a performance increase in doing so?

If you want my advice, take the stockholm back if you can, put a little extra cash on top and get the Monte Carlo. I have one of these and it's nothing short of amazing after it's rooted and unlocked. For £130 you get a phone which is faster than most mainstream droids with a 4.3'' screen that you can move over to the Three network and enjoy all you can eat data.

OH I ALMOST FORGOT: If you just want skype IM I highly highly recommend IMO. Excellent multi IM client.
The Stockholm doesn't look all that hackable at the moment, there's no custom kernels or anything yet so there's not a lot you can do unfortunately.

I can recommend you go to the Market and install Advanced task killer, from there you'll be able to kill apps which are running.

Actually, I have done rooting before and it is not as hard as it seems. I would say it increases phone performance by about 20%.

There are Apps available from the internet that allows you to root your phone with a tap of a button.

Its easier than it sounds and that tutorial helped me a lot with it :)


Also, rooting is just giving your phone root access. Meaning you can install special third party apps, etc. It is basically the Android equivalent to the iPhones Jailbreaking. :)

Yep the phone seems to have AWFUL video rendering performance, no idea why unfortunately. Also it seems that iPlayer only allows itself to work over wifi for some reason. That's awfully annoying when I have a HSDPA cell tower literally about 100m from me and have unlimited bandwidth (speeds of 6mbit/s on a phone, YEAH BABY.)
 
its because the flash is hacked and doesnt have hardware suport

the youtube app is flawless and ive tested a h264 720 tv series episode and it played fine
 
Got my Monte Carlo half hour ago so just charging it then I'm going to attempt to unlock it. Paid £99.99 including a tenners worth of credit but I'll be running it on 3 as I've been on 3 for years now & I rate it the best.
As for the phone, Loking at it I can't believe I paid less than a hundred quid for it Brand new. :cool:

it was on mxplayer, i dont know what settings it was encoded with but it was h264 codec and the file was about 1.2gb for a 50minute video

Confession time - :o

I must have tried unlocking the Monte about half a dozen times yesterday/last night but didn't get anywhere & ended up in a fog of text. :confused:
Copped out & took it down town today thinking **** it what's a tenner but None of the shops could unlock it. :( Wandered off home trying to clear my head to take on the wall of text/unlocking procedure again.

So I got back from town a while back made myself a T & a smoke & settled into some reading, Again. :rolleyes:
As I read through a thread there was some corrections by some nice Dude which cleared my earlier issues up.
I Clicked the Magic button & sat crapping myself thinking I'm going to Brick my phone & throw a hundred quid in the bin, I seemed to be working & gradually filled the SCarey Yellow bar up to 100% then said Download Complete. :eek:
At this point I was beyond help & beyond caring :p
So I stuck my 3 sim in a guess what ? It only ****** worked/works. :D
All I have to do now is work out how to get my WIFI working again, I did save my MAC addy before unlocking so I think I just need to flash a ROM & enter MAC addy again. :cool:

Massive Thanks go out to kn100/Kev as he just gave me 40 minutes of his time & put up with my Ape like iQ without complaint, My WIFI is now sorted. :cool:
Can't believe I payed less than a hundred quid brand new for this phone. :D
 
Can't thank you enough to be honest Kev as that 40 mins turned into about 3 hours over all. :o
Phones sweet as now & unlocked, WIFI works & I'm running a nice custom rom, Looks nice, runs sweet, I'm well happy. :cool:
