Slow connection but good signal- filter?

My router used to be connected using adsl to the phoneline at the same time as the phone using one of those filters. I was getting 2mbps downloads (i.e. 20mbps connection as advertised). But upstairs I got poor signal so I moved the router.

I moved the router nearer to me and plugged it into a differnt phone socket (same line/number), but left the phone where it was. I took the filter with me as an adapter to get the adsl into the phone socket. Now I get good signal but can only download at about 200kbps. Will it be a dodget socket, or something fixable?

I'm using a BT Homehub 3.

First of all do you have a filter on the socket with the phone connected, if not you need to get on on there.

Secondly, can you take the front of the sockets off and see which pins have cables going into them, it should just be 2 and 5 (normally using blue/white cables). If there is an orange cable connected to a different number remove this (this is the old ring wire and is not needed anymore, but can cause issues).

Thirdly, it is not recommended to have the router connected to an extension socket, although there is no reason why with good cabling this wouldn't work just as well. As an example I used to have my Sky router connected to an extension socket and would sync at about 8meg, moved it to the master socket and it synced at closer to 11meg.

If you sync at 20mbps at the master socket and only 200kbps at the extension then this would suggest to me that your cabling is rubbish.

Your best bet is move the router back and get some homeplugs, or alternatively get an Access Point or Repeater and connect that up for improved signal upstairs.

I don't have a second filter. Just as I read your post the phone rang and I lost net connection lol. I only have one filter so for now the router is going back to the old spot with the phone. I think i'll invest in some homeplugs.

The house is old and was owned by a disabled bloke so he wanted a phone in each room and the extensions were probably installed in the early 80s and are pretty knackered looking so I'll give them a miss.
