On the road....
Whilst mainly aimed at HGV drivers, I found this over on Trucknet, and I think spreading the word here can't do any harm....

Hi all,

Can I please bring to your attention a new campaign that is running called Slow Down Move Over, we are asking that a new law is introduced in the UK which forces drivers to Slow Down and if safe to do so Move Over when they see an emergency vehicle working on the hard shoulder, what we are classing as emergency vehicles are all the 999 Services, Breakdown & Recovery Vehicles (Inc Tyre Fitting vans) & the Highways Agency vehicles (HATO & Bear) . Too many fatalities and serious injuries are happening on our hard shoulders every year, some of these could have been prevented if this law had been introduced.

WE HAVE TO MANY LAWS ALREADY, DRIVER EDUCATION IS BETTER

On a recent survey carried out only 46% of the people surveyed thought that road safety advertising had a long term effect, simply look at the two second rule to see that the survey may be right, we would like to introduce a law that would force the DSA to change the driving test to include the SDMO stance, this I believe would educate drivers from day one.

I am a RAC patrol, you cannot imagine how good it is to see one of you lads pull out to give me room whenever I am working on the hard shoulder, thank you, but for every one that moves over another handful dont and it is scary when a 44 Ton object hurtles past at 56mph.

We need 100,000 signatures within one year to allow us to take this to Parliament. Please help bu signing the E-Petition.

Just spreading the word..... :)

What will taking that to parliament actually achieve?

Also, I'm confused, the post says that education is better than introducing a new law, yet goes on about getting the signatures needed to take it parliament in the hope of it becoming law? Which is it? Do they want to make it a law, or make it an informative educational campaign?

Surely, it's common sense that's required, not only on behalf of the passing motorist (regardless of vehicle being driven), but also on the people putting themselves in the dangerous position in the first place.

Same here, I always move over a lane or at least make the gap as big as poss & I slow right down.
Can't remember who told me the stats but loads of these recovery dudes get wiped out whilst at the side of the road, Shouldn't happen to a Dude just going about his daily job.

A lorry moving into lane 2 and slowing down could be a hazard to faster moving traffic in lane 2 surely?

They want to make it law so that it is forced / taught during driver training / education.:

I'd move over if there was space. I don't think I'd slow down however because you just know the person behind you won't be paying attention and will go straight up the back of you.

I always drive in the fast lane so this doesn't affect me...

Only kidding, makes sense obviously, unless we have bad drivers cutting across lanes to move over and causing potentially more serious issues.

I'd prefer it if everyone slowed down and moved over in the opposite way to what the OP wants.
Aka Rule 137 of the highway code. everyone appears to have forgotten this.

On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane. Use the right-hand lane for overtaking or turning right. After overtaking, move back to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.

What has that rule got to do with this thread?

When people can learn to actually obey the laws that are in place (like keeping left unless overtaken) I may start thinking about signing something that asks them to keep to the right (where appropriate)

I'm going to be pedantic and say you're still wrong, 264 is the rule you want people to follow ;)

You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, HA traffic officers in uniform or by signs.

Also it's not about getting people to use the right, people should just be considerate and give someone a bit of space if they are stranded on the hard shoulder or changing a wheel over.

I'll get flamed, but I don't care. I'm against this rule, you shouldn't be in the hard shoulder doing anything like changing tyres unless its safe to do so. Slowing down, forcing people to move over is going to cause even more accidents. If emergency crews are present at the scene then its down to them to control the situation ie close the lane etc...

The problem is people do not pay enough attention on the roads, more of these rules will not alter that.

So if I'm changing a wheel I have to keep looking over my back making sure no one is in the inside lane and if there is I have to stop and run behind the armco?

I think people can manage to safely get out of the inside lane, most people don't even use it anyway! I don't think anyone is suggesting you have to blindly pull into faster traffic, just exercise common sense and some courtesy towards fellow roadusers.

I think Every single road user should pull over for me now that I'm Ninja. :D

Did you see me wheelie past your front window, Of course not, NINJA !!! :p

Everyone should be doing this already if they see any vehicle stopped on the hard shoulder. Where and when safe to do so, of course. ;)
