I posted this in the 3G thread but thought I'd give it it's own thread to make it more obvious, and it has made a difference to someones 3G experience already in that thread.

It's been mentioned in a few forums: If you turn off spotlight search on your IOS 4 powered iPhone 3G it will help speed up the overall response of the phone.

Settings - general - home button - spotlight, then uncheck everything.

Hope it helps some of you :)

and either multi tasking or background image
also
deleting language packs, leaving only english and emoji packs will make it run like a rocket again. dont this last night to the wifes 3G, and its like it was on day she got it.
I highly reccoment spotlight off, background wallpaper off and delete language packs.
if anyone needs infos on how to delete language packs i will happily post the info

You can't multitask or set a background image on a 3G with iOS4?
And I can't see where to turn off Spotlight either

Thanks for sharing, this was the first thing I did when flashing my dads phone to iOS4 last week, seems to have worked. I also immediately performed 2 'hard' resets for good measure.

Just done it on the misses 3g and it does seem faster, it took 4 seconds to load her texts instead of 12, lol

No wonder I couldn't find it.

Don't think I have ever used Spotlight on my iPhone - now lets see if its any faster.

;)
Oh that's odd, on the iPhone 4 there is no 'home button' step in the menu navigation, so I assumed IOS4 would be IOS4 regardless of the device

Sorry all :)

Still freezes and keyboard is slow as hell. You type it makes the noise. Then you have to wait 20+ seconds (no exaggeration) until it displays

If you go into Settings there is a Spotlight Search under the "General" settings, below the "Location Services" setting tab. In there you can "untick" the Spotlight Search for each individual option ( mail, ipod, messages etc ).

I assume that turns it all off and does the same thing as the OP suggested?.

Well thats clearly wrong.

Mates 3G is NOTHING like that and he has multitasking enabled...

I've disabled spotlight on my 3GS too, might delete those localisation's etc too.
