Slow Macbook Pro

Hi,
Is there anything I can do to speed up the macbook?
Since the last update it's been considerably slower than the previous update.

Do the obvious disk check through disk utility but the first thing I would do is install the latest Combo update.

How do I install the combo update please? Im on Mojave 10.14.4

Is it a i series processor, or Core 2 Duo?

My father has a 2009 Macbook Pro, and even after installing an SSD, it didn't speed up all that much :/

Its an i5 2.5Ghz with 4Gb RAM. Intel 4000 Gfx 1.5gb

Doubling the RAM may help, along with installing an SSD if you haven't already
