Slow Orange internet connection

I'm having some issues with a really slow Orange internet connection.

The router model is a netgear n1500 wirless adsl2+ dng1000 and the connection is Orange 10MB.

These are the line stats - Do these look high?

The router info says downstream is only 516KBPS. Any idea what could be wrong?

Cheers

Judging by your Noise Margin of 16.8 db I would say that they have put you on that speed because of line problems and dropped connections. You'd expect around 3-4 Mbit with a 52db attenuated line. Try plugging into the master socket and see if the Noise Margin improves.

I plugged directly into the master socket and the noise margin dropped to 16.4 and downstream went up to 672kbps.

We are using a telephone extension from the main socket, could ths be causing the slow speed? Would I see much of an improvement if I was to connect directly via ADSL? i.e phone socket > Microfilter > 15M ADSL Cable to the back of the router

Cheers

I wouldn't say 100kbps is much of a result really, althougn it is 20% faster I suppose. Is it only recently that you've had problems or is this a new line and these speeds are all you've ever had?

The 0.4 drop in Noise Margin could account for the increased speed but I do wonder why it's working to this kind of level, where the figures of around 7 db on Noise margin is perfectly acceptable for most people.

You might be able to tweak this Noise Margin level by using the DG Team router firmware, which allows you to adjust a slider to reduce the SNR and increase your attainable rate at the expense of lower line stability.

It still sounds like Orange have managed the line and set the default Noise Margin quite a bit higher for some reason. Maybe give them a call to find out why. It could also be some form of automatic line management.

Provided the extension is a half decent one you shouldn't see much drop in speed on a 15M run, although it would be better if the cable was a twisted pair rather than a flat pair.

Plugged the router straight into the master socket without any extensions and these are the new stats.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6688 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 30.9 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 15.1 db 28.0 db

Connection speed has shot right up, however on a speedtest it still says we're only connecting at 400KBs. Orange have detected a line fault but we're not sure what the fault is at the moment.

It's strange how router settings are saying 6688KBPS yet loading pages is still slow and speed test only says 400KBs.

Cheers

BT Engineer came out today, did line tests and said there wasn't a problem with the line and it looks like orange have capped the speed at 500kbps for some reason.

He told us to call back Orange, considering just switching to another provider.

Wow that's quite some decrease in Line Attenuation by taking out your extensions. I only saw 1 1db increase running my flat extension cable.

Anyway it highlights that something is quite amiss with your internal wiring and this will need addressing or removal from your circuit. Look into positioning the router next to the incoming phone line and running cat5 to your PC or look into a twisted pair low loss extension cable of some king, RJ11 to RJ11.

As for the cap it is common for ISP to put a bRAS profile on the line which is calculated from the line as it was.

Some info on bRAS is here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm

Might be nothing to do with it of course.
