Hi,

I'm using the following:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-032-TP

I have BT infinity and the home hub 3.0.

With my laptop plugged directly into the home hub, speed test was showing a download speed of 37Mbps.

However, with the power line adapter on my desktop (in the study on the floor above), I'm only getting 13.5Mbps (actually a download speed of 2-3Mbps) - the same as I was with my old Netgear Wireless G USB adapter.

I live in a 3yr old house and the power line adapters are plugged directly into the wall socket.

Shouldn't I be able to get a better connection speed?

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Thanks.

Well on the HH3 only socket No 4 is gigabit, other three are just 100mb sockets, connect homeplug to the 1gb socket.

I would consider changing the HH3 to a Wireless-N Gigabit Router.

Nothing wrong with your choice of home plugs, I use them, plus the TP-Link AV 500 version as well, both superb.

Isn't the problem with the powerline networking?

Why did you suggest a new wireless gigabit router?

If the house is only 3 years old, then the mains wiring should be in excellent condition.

Basing things on similar issue I had with my HH3 & my TP-Link AV 500 homeplugs, only getting around 22Mb with my lappy, when I replaced the BT kit with a Draytek 2750n, I got a 100Mb, old lappy only has a 100Mb network adaptor.
Have you used the Management utility which comes with the home plugs, as that allows you to reset them & see if this helps.

Have you tried the homeplugs on other sockets around the house, do you still get same results, tried different cables?

Whats the connection rate the TP link software says your plugs are connected at?

Could just be real bad wiring for powerline and you're getting a slow connection.

Haven't tried TBH, as i want to keep my PC in the study without running wires everywhere - hence why I went with a powerline kit.

Would I be better off with a wireless N+ USB adapter?

You got a lappy you can use, without having to use your main pc for testing, just need to try homeplug & lappy in each socket.

Should get nearly identical figures in each socket I would think.

The powerline utility shows 96Mbps

Hmm, I get 80mbps sometimes but I can still reach 17meg download speed.

I suppose the plugs with noise filtering and through sockets might make a difference in speed.

Is your powerlines directly in the main sockets?

Anything in the other sockets (I presume it's a 2 plug socket they're plugged in)

You could always try and run jperf on the laptop at the plug at the router and if you have a computer at the other homeplug where you find the speed is slow.

That way you could rule out any internet issues.

If jperf shows it's slow then it's down to the powerline.

Energy saving lamps, Fluorescent lights, etc kills homeplug performance.

As does washing machine motors & other items which are electronically controlled, you can get all strange interference feeding back into the ring main.
