When transferring large amounts of data between Sata drives (eg Samsung F1 and Western Digital Blacks) the transfer starts out quite fast then quickly levels out to 18MB/s at which speed it remains for the rest of the transfer. This is far slower than i would have expected. Is this normal or is it something to do with hard drive controllers?

The speed of any transfer will be determined by the size of the files being copied. Large files will transfer far faster than slower ones because there are fewer updates being made to the MFT, each of which requires the target drive head to reposition.

Thanks for the info. They are small files, mainly music tracks. I would have expected faster transfer though. Oh well!

Its too slow, something ain't right.

I wont bore you with the Vista issue as SP1 fixed it and I guess if your on Vista your also on SP1.

Has one of them drives dropped down to PIO Mode ?.

Not too sure if i'm checking the right thing but in device manager under storage controllers, the SATA controllers there seems to be in Ultra DMA Mode 6 eg:

and yes, running Vista64 Ultimate with SP1
