Slow transfer speeds of files between computers on same network

Hey Guys,

I have had this problem for a while now but I really want to fix this. I have enabled file sharing of a certain folder in my main pc and I have attempted to copy this folder to my laptop via the network. The problem is the file transfer is only 500KB/s which is not very quick.

Both computers have windows 7 and are connected to the BT home HUB via wifi. I was expected file transfers of 20megabytes per second as it is on LAN. I have attempted to disable "remote differential compression" but this has done nothing.

Any ideas ?

So this is a transfer over wifi?

To get 20 Megabytes/sec you'd need a wifi connection rate of 200 megabit/second which is a big ask over wireless.

Even over 100 mbit wired Ethernet you aren't likely to get more than 10 megabytes/second. You'd need to use faster wired to see those sorts of speeds.

Still 500 KB is slow. Move the laptop closer or to a different spot.

Interesting. I didn't realise it was this slow over wifi. Thought that with wireless streaming of HD content that technology has caught up.

Thanks for you response. In response to this, what is the quickest method of transferring large sums of data eg 500gb between two computers apart from using an external hard drive?

Take out hard drive and put it in the other one.
