slow uploads all of a sudden

Hi all,

I'm on FTTP via openreach, with vodafone. I don't use their router. I've noticed over the last few days uploads have been atrociously slow. Downloads are fine, but good upload speeds are important especially on days I'm working from home.

Spoke to vodafone, and obviously because I'm not using their router they didn't want to entertain anything to do with my issues. So I plugged their router in - same issue, fast download crap upload.

They say they don't guarantee upload speeds, but the fact is I'm barely getting 5mbps at the moment. They just didn't care.

They got me to reboot the router, the ONT box etc... of course.

Anyone any ideas why the uploads would be all of a sudden so slow?

Two questions;

What's the expected upload speed? (when it's working well?)
And when you say uploads are slow, exactly what is slow? (what are you doing/testing, that is resulting in low upload speeds)?

I assume everything else is ok? If you have a video call or play games - everything is fine? (no packet loss, or very poor quality video, dropping out etc)?

Have you reset your ONT?

Have you plugged your PC/laptop directly into the ONT and tested?

Does appear to be an ISP issue, but GLHF getting Vodafone to do anything (one of the reasons I personally avoid them like the plague).

I'm with them because I got a massive discount - they're horrible to deal with. I'll try plugging my laptop into the ONT in a min. Not that Vodafone will do anything about it - they said they don't guarantee uploads.

Gee thanks. That's helpful.

If you're working from home then it's worth having a decent ISP, regardless of the cost. Most broadband costs is insignificant compared to the cost of commuting.

Have you also tried via VPN?

Then just lie. Download massive archives (Linux torrents) etc when they tell you to do speed tests on their end. All of a sudden the download speed is under their threshold and an Openreach engineer gets called to look at the problem and you can play dumb but mention the upload problem.

I thankfully only wfh 2 days a week. The service has been super reliable until the last week or so as you can see from the screenshots.

I think I may just have to do that - because getting mugged off by their 1st line support is really not helpful.

Might be worth mentioning the word "Ombudsman" to them, as Vodafone are a member of the scheme, they'll likely move a bit quicker if you mention that.

Looking at the graphs, it looks like they've rolled a change or done something after the 24th, as it falls apart after that...

Deffo needs them to investigate.

I'm also with Vodafone for 2 odd years and luckily for me it has been very reliable.

When I took it out though I did ensure I was on the "Pro" package as you do get a (slightly) better level of support, have you got that? It has made a difference when I have contacted them (it was a concern about routing and latency).

Right... I did the trick of choking my bandwidth, they're now raising a ticket. This is such a ballache.

Thanks for the suggestion.

They tried this with me because I wasn't running their kit when a dude digging up the road cut straight through my fibre they refused to help. I went ****** mental at them. Spoke to manager after manager for hours on end and eventually they put some marker on my account. Now they support me on any kit and haven't argued with me when I had a problem after that.

If you have a few hours, going absolutely postal and refusing to leave the phone until somebody does something isn't a bad bet

I mean it's clear there's an issue, it's just the lack of accountability or wanting to help that really ****** me off.

Yea similar to me, I even showed them a photo of the cable the digger cut through as my Internet just died a death but nope. No Vodafone kit plugged in, no help. Weirdly their contract isn't worded in a way that forces their kit so I just repeatedly asked them to show me where contractually it specified I needed to run their kit to get support.

Eventually they folded! Stupid you have to jump through any hoops at all... also my upload has been a bit slow of recent, should be 900 and has been around 500 for about a month. Not a massive deal as 500 is still enough but still...

The problem with choking your connection to force a ticket is if Voda task out an OPenreach engineer, they will come out, test the line which could be fine and then refer it back to Vodafone. Yes you're reliant on the speed provided by Openreach however that then has to traverse the Voda network which could be where you're struggling.

I believe there is a minimum speed amount and I seem to remember it being 10% of what your connection rate is, you're on the 1Gb so that's 115Mb therefore you should be hitting 11Mb through their network but realistically you should be smashing 100 most of the time.
