Slower performance from quicker CPU?

Hi guys,

I upgraded my CPU from:

Intel® Pentium® processor E2160 (1.80 GHz, 65W, 800MHz FSB, 1MB

to:

Intel® Core™ 2® processor E7400 (2.80 GHz, 65W, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB)

Not only does my PC seem to run slower, the Windows Experience score for Processor, Calculations per second went from 4.8 to 4.5.

I only really use the machine for web browsing and Football Manager but the FM is performing a lot worse than before.

Any ideas why this would occur?

The CPU is just in a HP dc7700.
 
Yep check that the hp bios actually supports the chip, might need a flash if one exists. 45nm support might be tricky especially if its an older model.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. Funnily enough when I put the CPU in I got a Microcode error, I updated my BIOS as HP suggested and thought that would be that?

Here is a screenie from CPUZ, can you shed any light? Oh and I didn't reinstall Windows when changing the CPU.

It's running at 1.6Ghz.

Run a demanding application while CPU-Z is open. If the CPU doesn't kick up to full speed then there's your problem.

You will need to go into your bios and check if stuff like C1E and/or EIST/Speedstep is enabled.
If this is gibberish to you then just take a good guess when looking at the CPU options in your bios.

I've gone into the BIOS, no such options. :(

I guess I should should check the HP 0A54H board supports this processor? I can't find any BIOS updates other than the microcode one
 
Is that a Q965 chipset? The only cpu support information i could find on that board is that it takes the old P4 cpu's and the 65nm C2D's. No quads and no 45nm cpu's.
 
Load the cpu and see if it goes to 2.8Ghz under load. If you're not getting a microcode error anymore then your BIOS at least knows about your cpu and should support its features. I want to believe its in your head that your pc is running slower, maybe due to lower index score? ;) Even at 1.6Ghz it should not be any slower than the older cpu at 1.8GHz, more cache, more ipc, faster FSB etc.. should negate that 200mhz difference, which is imperceptable anyhow.

Sits at 1596mhz under load.

The index score was completely accidental seeing it, I don't take any notice to it but it took me by surprise it being lower.

It's not in my head that the PC is running slower though!

I too would have thought the microcode update would mean the CPU is able to be used in my PC.
 
Cheers. Trying to run it as Admin and not letting me open it. Will keep trying.

Bah, it's not having any of it, just kicking up an error saying I must have Admin rights to run, I am doing so and it can't find the rtcore64 file which is clearly there,

Is there any alternative software that runs similar?

Hmm, works on my Laptop which has XP on.

EDIT: Seems you can't run this on Win 7 without the signed driver. Which leads me back to the original problem

Wahey, found a signed driver, will have a look now.

Ha thought you were on xp, then remembered 'performance index', yep should work ok with the signed driver inserted into its program files folder.
 
Not sure if this is the best route for me, I have no idea what I'm doing :D

Going to see what they suggest on the HP forums, thanks for your help
