Just got a q6600 a asus p5q pro 8gb in four sticks of 800mhz ocz ram and two seagate 320gb drives for raid 0
Also got a dvdsata drive

Yesterday on my old system vista 64 installed in 20 mins but on this system with the same disk it's taking hourssss I have floppy disabled the drives set as raid and configd and drivers loaded but it's no use expanding files and installing updates has been going for 4hours

I've taken most of the ram out and manually set the timigs but no joy please help my heads hurting :(

I remember I had a problem with an asus before was to do with ahci being enabled and the sata dvdrw not liking it, it installs fine then right at the end just sits and does nothing but you get harddisk activity like its installing and can keep on waiting and waiting and never ends.

I disabled ahci and re-enabled it after installing, this only works with vista though.

Have you set the correct volatge (vdimm) for the RAM? especially with having 4 stick installed.

Just tried taking it off raid in bios to reenable after install but it won't see the hd if I do that, secondly I tried it with my DVD drive on one of the internal esata ports controlled by marvell but no joy... Where else can I look!

What a nightmare, I can't find anything that'd be wrong all the boxes are ticked and double checked, what are the chances of the new dvdrw drive being pap or is it more likely that the board doesn't like it

New bios loaded.... Same story, will have to check the DVD drive for another in the morning, what else could I do? Or if the drive does the same what does that mean!

Googling asus p5q slow vista install problem shows some interesting pages but there's only so long I can stare at a 3" screen on my phone

What's dma please? Thanks

Did you look into this?

"Direct Memory Access" i seem to remember having problems back in windows 2000 which was related to this. Just try and find anything related to that in the bios and play with the settings. Have you tried a IDE harddrive/ dvd drive?

Sounds like a problem with the array.

I would just see if you can install the OS on a single array first (standard). If that loads the OS without any problems then you can safely say it's the RAID setup.

If this is the case, it could be either you are using the wrong RAID drivers, or there is a problem with the on baord RAID controller.

If the OS still doesn't load correctly on the single drive, then do the same on the other.

If still a problem, Update the BIOS make sure setting are on optimal.

Sorry I must have not been clear, I've tried single drives and 1 of the drives that is going to be raid with no avail I'm confident it's not the harddrives

And bios is the latest version so that can't be updated!

ok i got vista installed with my mates ide dvd drive... i took the dvd sata drive back to ocuk as it turned out to be dodgy... i swapt it for the same one and my mates pc tested it and the new one burnt fine... it installed vista on my machine alrite but it wasnt as speedy as the ide one.. probobly took about 40mins for the install where as it took 20mins on my other system with a slightly worse spec.. what gives!

Right last question to be 110% sure my board is a-ok... is there a way to test sata ports to make sure they are fully functioning?
