I've got a 30D and a canon G12 at the moment and I'm off to China for 3 weeks and one or the other is coming with me....

I've always taken the SLR but hate the bulk and the weight. To be honest i'm going off the whole SLR lark..

Will i kick myself if i just take the compact? It's a great camera and has been my underwater camera for 2 years with great results. It also fits in a pocket :D

Should also mention i don't want a bag full of lenses.

At the moment i have:-

canon 50mm 1.8
Tamron 18-270IS (the back packing lens but i'm not a fan)
the stock 18-55
sigma 105mm
sigma 17-70 (the one i'd take, i think)

Well if he just takes one lens then there isn't going to be a bagful.

Doesn't seem like anyone can answer that question other than you.

Thanks guys. I do like the SLR concept, on other holidays I've been glad of a good zoom and/or macro.

Wonder if selling the body, the 50 and the 17-270 would fund a lighter smaller body??

Well there's mirrorless, but in terms of size they are not really compact either.

I had the same dilemma before a recent trip to Tuscany. Brought the DSLR anyway with the 17-55, and bought an XF1 to see if it would do the job. For £130 it wouldn't have been a huge loss if it didn't. Ended up using the XF1 most of the time, the ability to slip it in a pocket was refreshing.

I'd say the obvious thing to do is take both and see if the compact fills the role. It's not like it should add a lot of baggage.

If you're like me you'll take a compact then wish you had taken an slr because that ultra wide angle or telescopic lens you have at home would be perfect at that moment, or wish you had the better iq and so on

If you took the slr you'll probably start getting annoyed at the bulk of it and the kit that you need to take just incase

I sold old my slr stuff a few years ago and got a compact, I missed all the slr features and the image quality but was happy enough that I didn't have to lug around all those lenses

These days I have another slr but I have solved the issue a bit by having a small good quality backpack and only taking a couple of lenses wherever I go to reduce weight and leaving any I don't need that day in the room safe

It also depends where im heading and the type of holiday too, for city breaks or scenic places then I take the slr, but for places such as Orlando where I'll be going to theme parks mostly and being too fussed about photography then I will just take a compact , although I am considering getting an rx100 just for that trip

Personally I think if I went to China then I'd want the best equipment I had because I know I'd be coming back with 2000 shots

Anyways hope something in that helps you decide heh

Don't under estimate the difference is size and weight. I've just bought a Panny G5, 2 primes and 2 zooms and can fit them into a bag around 1/4 the size of what I get my equivalent D7000 kit in.

It's been a breath of fresh air for me personally.

I sold my DSLR and got a mirrorless instead, the lower bulk and weight has been brilliant i take it everywhere with me now, with a 35mm attached it fits into a large pocket, but i often carry it as is with a 24-70 fitted. Doubt i will ever get a DSLR again.
Im going to North Cyprus soon and will be taking it along with the RX100 for the girlfriend to use.

I've had m4/3 before but it was still too big to fit into my pocket, and if the lenses hadn't been so ridiculously expensive compared to SLR then I would've needed a big bag to carry them all in any way because of their surprisingly large size. In the end the picture quality was too poor compared to a crop SLR never mind full frame so I sold it.
