SLR's ???

If you do go for an SLR the lens to get is a Tamron 18-250mm it's the nearest you will get to an all round lens. However if I were you I would seriously look at the Fuji bridge options.

im going down to DO NOT MENTION COMPETITORS on thursday to have a play with the fuji s9600 and the canon 400d

anything particular you guys can recommend I look out for which we help me decide which camera to go for?

I read on a lens site that the tamron 18-250mm lens was not all that good - they suggested the sigma 17 - 300mm to be better irrespective of the fact its got a wider aperture and allows more light in - is that true??

thanks everyone for your help...

Especially Nico's for providing such detailed knowledge and saving me ££££

I bought the fuji s9600 last night....

Got lots of learning to do I can see, there are so many functions on manual WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!

Any guides, tutorials for this camera?? I havent really had a hardcore play which I realise is the best way to just get stuck in and go for it....cant wait

Thanks in advance..

my guide for just about any camera.

put it in aperture priorty. play and see what happens on shots when you change aperture.

find a moving subject. put it on shutter priority. play. see what happens when you vary the shutter suuter speed.

for digital cameras. find the white balance controls. change the white balance and take some shots. change it some more. take more shots. see what happens.

that should do you for a while. after those basics are down you should be pretty capable to find they rest out.

To the OP...

The 9600 is a great choice. I couldn't quite afford one so went for the 6500 (same sensor and lens).

The 9600 and the 6500 have had their image quality compared to that of entry level SLR's so to be honest you won't go far wrong. They also both have all the manual controls you are likely to need and of course, the flexibility of that 28mm-300mm lens.

Have fun and get some pictures up soon!
