My girlfriend needs a car:
- 20 Years old
- 2 Years driving experience
- 0 No claims bonus
- Will be used to commute to and from work everyday (placement year)
- Will probably be sold after her placement year
- Budget is £3000 excluding insurance.

Vitals:
- Low insurance group
- Small hatchback (Polo size)
- Holds its value well (Sold after a year)

Optional:
- Reliable (Motorway everyday)
- Build quality (Not Corsa or similar)
- Air conditioning

Already Reject:
- Corsa

She's definitely thinking of selling it after a year as she will no longer require a car after her placement year. She will need a car for her placement year as her workplace is kind of situated in the middle of nowhere (JCB near Alton Towers). What do you guys recommend? Worthwile spending that amount on a car which will be sold after a year or not?

Okay guys, she's decided on a Ford Fiesta 2002-2005.

It will be a 1.25 sized engine, but which trim level should she target? Does it go from Finesse, LX, Zetec and then Ghia? Which trim level would hold its value better for a resale in one years time? Anyone know much about the trims?

FYI, she considered the Polo, but she just preferred the looks of the Fiesta, that's all.

Polo seems a good shout, they cost more, but they fetch more come selling time because of this. Its polo size, cheap on insurance and is a low insurance group. also has a better build quality than the equiv fiesta/clio. Also, air con.

Fair enough that particular car is sold, but something similar. should be able to sell it for over 2 grand in a years time.

Focus, don't moan about the size because its really isn't much bigger than a modern super mini.

+1 Focus
Comfortable and reliable; have had one for 5 years.
2001 model 1.6LX with 60-70K miles for around £1200-1500. Definately no need to spend more.

classic mini in good condition for a lot less than that, small bouncy car and instant credability with anyone at her uni with an ounce of repsect for cars :D

failing that if she gets in and drives either a golf or polo she wuill love them... nice cars to drive, reliable, easy to work on, low on juice etc etc.

Forgot to mention, she's aiming for the Mk5 version, not the MK4 example above. I've seen a few within her budget but not sure about the trim levels.
