Hi all.

Got 3 new 20tb exos hard drives and the packaging wasn't very good. One big box no bubble wrap and so the three inner cases (no bubble wrap or foam again, just inner cardboard) we're left to move about inside.

2 drives appear perfect. One has a small dent. I haven't put it into my NAS. It is tiny so should I keep or exchange? They have offered me £30 to keep but thinking if it's worth it for potential warranty issues, even if it is tiny.

This is the box as it was received (not by me)

I would also return it, especially as I would be worrying the entire time about any warranty issue being rejected citing that damage.

I would be sending that right back.

I would not even bother attempting to connect it to the PC etc.

£30 for a drive that costs so much is also unacceptable.

When it fails someone will say the warranty is voided as its been dropped which has caused the failure.

How was it damaged? Has it been dropped on the floor or bashed off another drive in the box? Others could end up faulty.
No idea, wouldn't like to speculate. Could be anything really along the delivery chain.

Well the other drives look perfect and give me no issues so far in Unraid. Just finished the 24 hour scan. I guess that's the chance you take with any drive internally.

I had the same thing last year, funnily enough with the same drive but it just hadn’t been packaged well enough (not OcUK).

I didn’t notice the dent right away and hooked it up to a PC and copied 10TB of stuff over to it. It was only after I shut it down and was about to move it to another system that I noticed the dent.

Despite the fact it worked fine, there was no way I was going to be happy with a dented drive so I sent it right back.

Never accept a damaged HDD, it's more likely to fail, and when it does fail if it's physically damaged in any way you're going to have a real issue with getting a warranty replacement, as the likes of the manufacturer will likely flat out refuse to touch it.

Agree with this. If you get a warranty failure on the drive the very first thing they will say is "oh, look, you dropped it".

I wouldnt even put it in my drive to test i would also let them know how poorly they sent the item, personal i would look at a different supplier as they would make my question everything else from them, if that is how they believe it was acceptable to send that to you.

I would definitely return them for a refund. Order from a place that know what they’re doing. These drive will almost certainly fail prematurely after this.
