Small desktop speakers for general use- £30

Power the speakers directly from a wall socket.

Also don't run them from the same extension lead as the computer, as this risks a ground loop between the computer (source) and amplifier.
They are powered from the mains. I just meant they sound nice even when quiet. They do go plenty loud enough.

I don't have an option for alternative power source unfortunately, only a single plug in room so I run a 6 way surge protected extension lead off this to power the whole setup.

Those power strips are restrictive for amplifiers. It gets worse if your computer is drawing high wattage (say it's underload or playing a computer game), as the computer is putting more load on that already restrictive lead. That said you probably won't notice on those speakers, however you certainly would on higher powered amplifier.

The other issue as mentioned above is ground loops, as the electrical path is so close between the source and the amplifier, again if might not be an issue for you. What i'm really saying is don't bother about any of this, however it's good knowledge to know if setting up in the future and have option to do these things.

3000W from one output, so not a problem.

The problem is running everything from a single budget power extension not the wall socket. Separately there is still increased chance of ground loops.

Unless your running very good mains conditioning your normally always best plugging the amplifier directly into a wall socket as this gives least impedance and voltage sags.

I'd need about 10 mains sockets if I did that.

Just the right size, and sound nice even fairly quiet.

Raise them up on stands
Second this.

The speakers should be put higher with ideally the tweeters to as close to ear level as possible.

If not buying stands for them, you could try and see if you could get some bricks somewhere and wrap them with A4 paper/gift-wrap paper, then put them on your desk to use as "stands/base" to elevate the speakers higher
