I recently purchased an item from eBay and the delivery was quoted in the auction as Royal Mail Special Delivery (charged at £4). I received the item yesterday and it was sent via Royal Mail First Class. Can I do anything about this? I know it's not a lot of money, but it's the principle. I was willing to pay £4 for SD, but not for just First Class.

Thanks.

It's not the fact I was charged double for postage, rather the fact they lied about something in the auction. No I didn't have to sign for it.

Be picky, you could claim not to have recieved it (to annoy the buyer and waste their time), OR do a partial chargeback on the carriage on paypal. If it become a hassle dealing with people who complain, they might start giving the service they charge for.

Why do people think that when someone does something they didn't expect that they can retaliate 'on principle'... if you need the extra few quid so much, what are you using eBay for in the first place...

just claim you never got it that will teach em for not sending it recorded

Morally wrong perhaps, but it would work if the auction had PayPal buyer protection. Most sellers don't realise that they need to send items by a method which is trackable online, *or* PayPal will automatically side with the buyer if the buyer says the item didn't arrive.

Many sellers believe that proof of postage is sufficient, or if they offered insurance but the buyer didn't take it.. but they are wrong ;)

Strange logic seeing as people generally use ebay to try and find a bargain. I too wouldn't be amused paying £4 for SD and having it arrive by regular post.

'A bargain' is relative. If you purchase memory or a chip or somthing £4 isn't a huge amount more. That, plus its generally expected. I don't like it, but I don't want to get them back for it - I am happy enough when I get the item I am promised

i wouldnt say go as far as saying it hasnt arrived as thats ott. Maybe just say "he didnt send SD as advertised" when you leave him feedback.

Be careful (the OP) if you leave a 'soft positive' like that because some people will still retaliate with a neutral or neg.

That will earn you negative feedback and possibly create more mess - is that what £2-3 mean to you?

Principles are important though..

More important than what? Unneccesary hassle?

Ask yourself this - if this were you, would you really want to engage someone over such a small matter? Would this not waste time and energy over a 'principle' that has no real effect on your life?

If it was me I would contact the seller to ask why he didn't send it SD, and ask him to give a partial refund of the postage. As for feedback, I wouldn't leave any at all, unless he left some first so couldn't retaliate, and then I would leave a neutral if he didn't give me the asked-for partial refund.

At the end of the day, he paid for a service which was not supplied.

Therefore, if indeed the auction stated the postal methos as RMSD then the seller has broken his side of the contract.

It may have been a general mistake, it may have been done on purpose however he may also be avoiding fees by intentionally marking up postage, which is against ebay T&C's
It's not worth the hassle of getting retal neg's mate.

Have you emailed him and spoke t him about this ?

For me, the time it would take to do such things is worth more than £2-3... and the things I have engage myself in consume too much of my mental energy to care about such postage issues.
