Small office cooling options

Hi folks,

I've been digging around for options and seeking advice on possible solutions.

I have a small office at home, I mean small 140cm x 140cm and have worked from it everyday all day for almost the last 2 years. I'm happy with my setup, adjustable height desk, storage etc (it's well optimised)

Now most of the time its fine, but I do need to keep my door closed to avoid rugrat intrusion, noise at night etc.

The issue I'm wondering if I can do anything about is the heat. When I fire up a game, the system heats up, that heat is moved out into the cupboard I mean office. PC get's louder, the already warm air is being sucked back in, I'm getting hotter, system is getting hotter etc etc. I've never had a thermal cut out but thats probably because I break before the PC does. I did use a swamp cooler over summer which was pretty good but I'm sure I can implement something more fitting.

So I've been contemplating on options. I do have a small window behind my desk (only opens at the top) but really doesn't help expel / circulate the air.

So I was thinking of installing an extractor fan in the ceiling, duct it to the shower fan ducting with a Y-splitter and let it pull the hot air out and pull the cold in through the window. The distance in the attic is probably 3-4 metres max. Possibly one with a smart/remote control (or have it plugged into the mains via hue power socket for remote control)

I did consider piggy backing off the extractor fan for the shower but it's noisy and know that won't work. Though I've looked around for replacement extractors that possibly run quieter.

I even thought about building some kind of window attachment I can hook over the open window (thought some decent, silent PC fans in a row) I could control to push or pull air.

So this is where I'm at, would these options work for me, has anyone else done anything similar or overcome the same problem another way? Interested to know any thoughts, suggested equipment etc before I embark on a journey of discovery :)

I'd fit an inline extractor in the loft ducted to the room and a grill in the ceiling. Going for inline will make it far quieter and more effective. The heat will rise, be extracted out the ceiling then pull cool air in through the window. Given how small the room is it should work really well.

Agree with what Abyss said. To expand on it - extractor fans are generally better when pulling than pushing. If you bridge it onto your shower duct you'll need to prevent pushing air back into the shower room. Whereas if you put an inline fan at the exit of the vent, you can bridge your shower and game rooms and it will ventilate both at once. You may want a method of closing one grille or the other e.g. in winter when you want to retain warmth.

If you do go down the extractor route, I wouldn’t go into the existing shower one, you’ll risk moist air being blown into your office. You’ll need to add in a dedicated duct just for that room. You’ll also need to think about power and how to turn it on and off.

What about a proper air conditioner unit? Sure it’s a lot more money but it’s the proper tool for the job.

A much cheaper and quicker option would be to not play games whilst the door is shut and you are supposed to be working :D
